Our visit with neurology this week was the last straw. My 4 year old has had migraines since infancy. She is in the ER if not hospitalized about once a month or so. She sees many specialists (cardiology, GI, endocrinology, genetics, craniofacial) and all of her other doctors are caring, supportive and genuinely concerned about her and the fact that she is in and out of Children's Hospital so often with these bizzare episodes. It has only been neurology that doesn't take us seriously and acts like it's no big deal for a 4 year old to be going on three years now of regularly occuring debilitating migraines.
This week we went in for a follow up visit. See, it was Feb 3rd the last time she was hospitalized for two days (and I thought we we were fortunate that it was HER Neuro that was working the hospital shift those days, so he was able to see her - for the first time - having one of these episodes). Well, to my great dismay, he did not even remember seeing her at the hospital 3 weeks ago!! This also meant that the medical records from Mayo Clinic that I copied and gave to him at the hospital - he did not know where they were and had not read them.
On top of it all, I had asked her GI doctor to give Neuro a call to discuss her case, since her GI doc has been my best ally and the most concerned about her condition. I thought if the two of them talked Dr to Dr, perhaps GI could convey the concern he feels about her to Neuro. Well, GI called, but Neuro was too busy and did not return the call...
I have put up with Neuro all this time, because he is part of a large pediatric Neuro group - the ONLY one associated with Children's Hospital where she visits so often...I even tried a year ago to change Dr's within the group, but the group would not allow it, so I have felt like a hostage to this particular Dr. Until now...
Yesterday I discovered that Children's Hospital has put another Neuro on staff, one that is not associated with this same group. I called and got her an appt - for Monday 3/2!! This is a wonderful answer to prayer and I am thrilled! With all of her medial issues, it is so hard to feel empowered to take a stand against any of the Specialty Doctors and I have shed many tears in frustration trying to figure out what else I can do. Her care can only improve from where we've been.
Comments:
Congrats on getting a new doctor, may the new one be full of wisdom and knowledge and unlock these terrible migraines your daughter is having. We have seen a huge improvement with the migraines since Aaron started using the magnets, even my daughter has been able to keep the migraines at a minimum. We are sleeping on them, walking on them, wearing them. I'm telling you we have become a walking testimony since being introduced to them. I will be praying for your daughter.
