I am a firm believer in live and let live. I believe that our individuality is what makes us unique, and that one of the easiest ways to make a statement about who you are is through your dress and style.  Sometimes, however, I have to wonder what statement a person is making, and if they are really intending to convey that message. Again, though, live and let live, right? Sure thing, but there are times that it is simply impossible to let someone live without making a comment.

While doing a nice mall crawl yesterday, I was able to engage in one of my very favorite activites: people watching. The mall had been overrun with some sort of school group sporting purple tuxedo vests and bow ties, which was odd enough to see on a weekday morning. However, there were some other questionable sights as well. How about the girl in the mini jean skirt and fish net stockings, with multiple piercings and questionable wording on her tee-shirt? Orthe person wearing low rise jeans in an attempt to declare to the world their intention of becoming a plumber? One of my favorite sources of irony for the day was going into the makeup store (my goodness, J, did you really need to open my eyes? I feel like a moth who has just discovered a beautiful flame) and seeing some of the sales people put together well, and that one lone person who looked like she got into Mommy's makeup drawer without an instruction manual. Now there was someone I want to buy cosmetics from. Or not.

But it was the display table in a certain store brought to my attention by a certain friend that just shattered my illusions about the progress of man. White jeans. I kid you not. We saw white jeans. They were at Macy's, which made it even more shocking to me; there is a certain level of class that I associate with certain stores, but white jeans fit no where near that association. Again, live and let live. To each their own. But tell me true: Do you really need to own those? I survived the eighties, and I see no need to revive one of their trendy misfits ... ever!

I have yet to meet anyone who wasn't George Michael who looked GOOD in white jeans.  I live in fear of the day someone decides to "revive" those hideous stretchy tubular fabric things one cobbled together into "outfits"; they were called "UNITS" and came in "jewel-tone" colors (another thing the 80's gave us, jewel-tone colors).  Nobody who wasn't sired by a pipe cleaner and a chicken bone could wear those things without looking like a  Macy's Day Parade float.

I lost all hope that fashion trends would  be sensible and chic ever again when bell-bottoms(flares) came back.. ok I admit it, I wore them in the early 70's but in my defense I was a little kid and my mother picked out my clothes.

Well now.  I have just learned that my favorite summer wardrobe staple, the capri pant, is "sooooo last year."  And that the shoes that caught my eye were granny shoes.  So perhaps I am not the one to comment on the white jeans.  I will say that I'm getting images of Saturday Night Fever.

LOL I totally understand. I'm of the mind that if you are old enough to have lived through the fashion once, you shouldn't try it again. =)

White jeans seem to be a staple around here.  Not in my home, but this area.  But always before Labor Day.  And rarely on anyone under the age of 40.

ugg - yet another example of how the world is against mothers!! (I was once sitting, weeping, in the car with my infant and toddler looking on while I moaned "why why WHY did I think I could wear white!!")
