To make a long story short, our home was broken into this week. I believe the maintenance staff or the exterminators were the ones who robbed us. It just so happens that on the day we were robbed our building was scheduled to have an extermination. Usually we receive notice a day or two in advance. We never received notice. I was told conflicting stories on why they were not able to "enter" my unit to exterminate. However someone still entered our apartment without force of entry to steal our stuff. Isn't the building liable for negligence? They have the master keys to our apartment. No one else has a key. No one has lost a key. The building sec. said that she did not see our keys in the office, but changed her story and said they found them. Sound fishy to me...
I did contact police the same day. he told me Saturday the case is administratively closed and that was because of no eye witnesses. They could not dust because we notice touched the apartment. The attorney said we have no case and now I am just sad.
Comments:
I would call and make a police report and say what was stolen. And is it possible to change your locks yourself? I sure would!
Definitely seek a lawyer! I believe they would be liable for negligence. Sorry this happened to you.
I don't think a lawyer can do much for you since there is not a witness. But, it sounds like an inside job. Maybe you need to set up hidden camara in your unit. If they did once, they would do it again.

That sounds very fishy to me! Write it all down just in case, that way you don't forget anything they said. I would contact a lawyer and ask, this sounds like the apartments should take responsibility for the issues. The last time I lived in an apartment, I remember being that they could not enter unless they had given a good notice (not like a day, unless you agreed to that). Since they are saying they couldn't enter, why were the keys missing? will the police search the maintenance guys place for your stuff? I would get the heck out of there. They should let you out of your lease with no charge too, because they are so seemingly at fault here!
