I have a new foster dog. Her name is Java. She used to have a family of her own , one that apparently loved her, except for doing one important thing for her. She is housebroken , she has lovely manners and she is well behaved on a leash and in the yard. She is good with kids, nice to cats, and she is super friendly to everyone. So why is this dog Homeless, and why was she almost killed? Her family made a mistake. They didnt get Java spayed. When Java inevitably got pregnant, her family threw her out to fend for herself. She gave birth to her 7 puppies under one of her families neighbors trailers. The man couldnt keep her , and went to Javas family , and asked them to be good dog owners and to care for their dog and her puppies. They refused. The man did what he thought was best for Java and took her and her babies to the pound.

The pound is a scary place, especially for a momma dog and her babies, because you see, they even kill momma dogs and their babies at the pound. The pound workers saw what a good mommy Java is , and saw what nice manners she had and they tried to find a Rescue to take them in. They didnt have much luck , because Java is a Pit Bull and so are her puppies, and not many rescues want to take Pit Bull Terriers into their programs. My rescue was the last rescue they called because we were the furthest away from the pound, a 4 hour drive. We take Pit Bulls though , so they decided to try. We told the pound that if they could arrange for transport, or get her on the weekend transport shelter run , we would take her and all her babies. A shelter volunteer decided to drive her up to us on his way home for spring break from college. Java and her babies were Saved from eminent death.

I have had Java now for two weeks. Her seven puppies all have names and they are growing and doing excellently. Momma Java is now clean , wormed, well fed and warm. I can honestly say , I cannot see why ANYONE would either intentionally breed their dog , or not get their dog fixed , resulting in accidental litters, because having these dogs is in truth , A FREAKING MESS. We have fostered puppies before, but we have never had a momma and puppies that were still dependant on her, usually the pups are older and weaned. These little guys are cute as pie, when they arent crying , screaming, pooping , peeing , vomiting, coughing , sneezing and making other assorted messes. THIS IS NOT the way you want your kids to experiance "the circle of life" I have spent most of my time the last 2 weeks scrubbing shit, piss and vomit off my floors, wiping snotty baby dog noses and cuddling crying baby dogs. Momma Java is exhausted and frankly being tortured, her nipples are all chewed up , she has scrapes, scratches and sores all over her mammary areas, and she is getting testy with the babies because she is hurting so bad. NOT something I would EVER want to make one of my female dogs go through. Poor Java is also bleeding , like we women do after we have a baby. You can tell its uncomfortable and her poor doggy female area is sore and irritated from it because dogs cant wipe themselves like we can. I have been working hard to try to ease her discomfort, but I dont know how much good it is doing. I have no clue why a person would put their dog through this agony REPEATEDLY , in order to profit from it. It is amazing to me that someone would let their dog be so uncomfortable and end up so wounded and sore just to make some cash. I also know some of this info is TMI, but you know what? I really dont care, the realities of puppy hood and doggy motherhood have to be told in a real and realistic way so that hopefully someone will read this and make an appointment to have their dog spayed or neutered. Its not just the girl dogs , its the boy dogs too, they dont need their nuts any more than the girls need their uteruses. Bottom line. Get your pet fixed if it isnt already , save your dogs from unnecessary breeding . Remember Java , and her babies and all they have gone through and still have to go through, she needs to be spayed , she needs to be vaccinated, and all her puppies need to be spayed or neutered , they need to be vaccinated, and then they ALL have to wait around in foster care until a wonderful Pit Bull Savvy home wants to welcome one of them as a new family member. Dont do this to your dog, your cat, your flying purple squirrel monkey. Please get your pets fixed, please. If you cant afford it , please contact your Local county shelter, ASPCA, Humane Society, or your county Health department and request information on low cost spay , neuter and vaccination clinics, they exist and sometimes will fix your pet for FREE, or they go on an income based sliding scale. Please dont do to your pet what was dont to Java, please be responsible and get your pets Spayed and Neutered.

I foster for the love of dogs, I am in no way complaining about all my family has to do for Java and her pups, but I wanted to get the point across that caring for them is NOT a picnic in the park. I love having her because her and her babies alternative was sure and eminent DEATH. I am glad we could save them from that , caring for them is my pleasure, but I felt the need to make a point with this post, and I hope I did.

How  horrible Java was thrown out through no fault of her own. I believe in spaying and not breeding! There are enough unwanted animals in this world !God Bless you for taking her in!

BUMP!  She's a beauty.  I always hope people who may be unsure of whether or not to spay or neuter will read these posts!

I applaud you for taking her in.  All our animals are fixed.  Except our youngest kitten.  He will be in the next month.  I took in a cat once that was just wondering the streets obviously pregnant. We took her in and she had 4 kittens.  We named them, and found them homes.  Then we found her a home.  It is sad how heartless the pound seems.  they say it 's because of too many animals.  Perhaps they should spend the money on educating the public.  Provide services.  Our humane society gives out coupons to get 50 bucks off fixing a pet.  that is good I think. People need to take care of their pets.

My mom resuced two pit bulls from her local shelter and the girl dog was pregnant with 8 puppies. After my mom had to hand feed her thru the rest of the pregnancy she wormed the pups and then once the momma dog could handle it (she got really ill) she got her fixed and mind you she paid the full amount and is on disability if she can do it then so can all these other "pet owners" can too. I have 2 cats not fixed only cause i haven't found the right agency to help a low income family but they are seperated at the slightest hint of homone time. Till I can get them fixed I just got their momma fixed on the 2nd and before I saved up and got her fixed she was crated during heat cycles in a Xtra large crate. Btw all my cats are indoor only. My grandppas dog i recently inherited isn't fixed but my grandma wants to beed her with her dog so once the two dogs pass she will have a comanion and miniture dauchsand normally have only 1-2 puppies. or so i've been told.

My goodness!  They're so big already!  And they're still nursing?  Wow!  It's so sad to hear what Java's family did to her.  You can't be a responsible pet owner and believe in "disposable pets."  I look at pet ownership the same way I look at motherhood -- mine until death (either theirs or mine).

My friewnd had to take her doggie baby back to the humane society because her parents didn't like him anymore, and she's heartbroken about it.  Poor little guy came from a puppy mill, so it makes sense that he'd need some extra TLC.  But her parent's aren't dog people, so they didn't want her to keep him (after he'd been there for like 5 months already.)

She's beautiful.  I wish owners like that could switch places with the pets they throw away.
