We all have times when we feel faint-hearted, almost like we have no strength to keep going. Our personal reserves are gone. The pain is too great, the battle too big. Where will we find the strength to keep going? How will we be able to stand strong when others depend on us? These are very real questions in my life. It’s during these times that I pray:
Hear my cry, O God.
Listen to my prayer.
From the ends of the earth I call to you.
I call as my heart grows faint.
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. (Psalm 61:1-2)
Do you remember that song from Sunday School that goes like this:
The wise man built his house upon the rock
The wise man built his house upon the rock
The wise man built his house upon the rock
And the house on the rock stood firm.
But the foolish man built his house upon the sand
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
And the house on the sand fell flat.
I’ve been watching a house being built in our neighborhood with my five year old son. He loves to see the big trucks. He loves to see each new thing being done each day. He loves to watch the construction workers way up high on the roof. I’ve never really watched each stage of a house being built until now. It’s really pretty cool watching each phase. A few days ago they were laying down the cement foundation. It had never really occurred to me until then that if the cement foundation were not there, the house would never stand strong. It reminds me of the verse, “Unless the Lord builds the house, those that labor labor in vain.”
The Bible describes God as a rock and mighty fortress. When we build our lives upon His words, we will be able to stand strong even when the storms come and the winds blow (as they surely will). The Bible is full of principles about how to live wisely (see Proverbs). It is full of stories about how Jesus taught His disciples to live (see Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John in the New Testament). When we go to Him with even the smallest problem or decision, we will be building on a strong foundation that will help us become strong.
Find rest O my soul in God alone
My hope comes from Him
He alone is my rock and my salvation
He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend upon God.
He is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in Him at all times, O people.
Pour out your hearts to Him.
For God is our refuge. (Psalms 62:5-8)
