Well, I do. DH used to, but then we found I was better at it. So, we have a notebook that is set for both accounts. I write in it every night with the reciepts from the day. When our statements come, I check it against the notebook. If something is off, I immediately ask DH first, and then if we can't figure it out we call that bank. We actually caught an online company taking money from DH's accound illegally this way (we don't know how it got his information.) This notebook is small, so if need be, it fits into pockets or the diaper bag.
We also have a planner for every bill and when it needs to be paid every month. This way we don't forget or overspend before the bill needs to be paid. It took some time, but we have a system that now works for us.

sounds like a great system, i haven't balanced our checkbook since my dad died july 16, 2002 (not sure why it just didn't seem important anymore). maybe i'll start again!
