What to do when your child won't poop in the potty

One of the most common potty training issues is a child that will pee in the potty no problem, but refuses to go poop in the potty.

Potty training can be scary for a child, which is why we try and make it fun with silly dances and rewards. They are learning to recognize the urge to go and trying to figure out how to control that urge.

Pooping on the potty requires the child to sit longer which can be difficult for a child over two. This is one reason potty training before the age of two can be easier!

Here are a few tips you can use to help your child feel comfortable pooping in the potty.

1. If your child poops on a regular schedule be sure to have them on the potty at that time every day. Catching them at the right time they may even surprise themselves and realize it's okay!

2. Give them a special book or toy that they can only have while sitting on the potty. Make it something that will keep their interest for as long as you want them to sit on the potty.

3. Have an extra special reward for pooping on the potty. It is important to still reward going pee on the potty, even if they don't have any pee accidents during the day.

4. If they insist on wearing a diaper to poop in you can let them. Encourage them to poop in their diaper as long as they are standing in the bathroom.

Next have them poop in their diaper while sitting on the potty.

Eventually you can move to taking the diaper off and pooping on the potty.

Your child will be a pro in no time!

5. Make up a really fun and silly "poop dance." Many parents are self conscious about acting like a silly fool and doing a potty dance, but they work! They even work better than candy :)

6. Have a reward chart on the wall by the potty with a square for sitting on the potty, one for peeing in the potty, one for pooping in the potty, one for wiping and one for washing their hands. Let them put a sticker on each task they complete. Have a big reward for completing all of the squares.
