Learning about my past through my mom's past

I learned today that my mom was a ripsnort. Regardless of what she says lol.. I went down roads that were barely wide enough for our vehicle let alone us and another one. Through creeks and rocks where the drop off would give you a real good but cold bath.  I was shocked when she told me that some boys in her class were punished for misbehavior by being forced to sit by her. Why?? Because she was poor, actually the poorest, and to sit next to them was considered degrading. How sad is that?? I was just angry for her at that point. I heard tales about snow so deep you could not tell where fence lines or roads were. Papw apparently drove a horse drawn sleigh down the one road in a winter with snow 5 foot deep, ice as well. they discovered later he was driving right over a fence, had the ice given way they could have gotten killed.

This is the house she lived in as a young girl:

Right across the road was the crick ( yeah I spelled that right lol) they would go wading and swimming in it in the summer and would ice skate on it in the winter. My uncle toldher one time to stand on the ice with her legs spread and he would slide right under them. Well he did and caught her legs as he went through and put her face first into the ice. Memaw was not pleased.

This is her first school building. One of the boys she went to school with later bought it and turned it into a dance witha  live band. He has added onto the building without doing so much damage to the basic design it was originally made for. Mom lived 6 miles from this school and they had to walk down that muddy one lane road 2 miles to even get to a road to catch a school bus. I cannot imagine. Trust me ishe says the road is way better then it was when she was a kid, I have a hard time believeing it cause it was barely more then thin asphalt poured over rock today.

After her baby sister was born they moved into this house:

Picture it 7 kids and a mom and a dad in this house. It did have a second floor though. My mom knows because she jumped out of it's window when Aunt Peg came up missing. See this house was right across from a store and the creek.

Behind those buildings is the creek they played in, but it could just as easy sweep them away as not far from here there was visible signs of itbeing  over the road and even some trees. Anyway my aunt had gone behind the store to pee by the creek bank. Their papaw was sitting in front of the store, never saw her go behind it. Well she got down there and peed and could not get her pants pulled back up and she was embarassed to come back up the hill with her pants stuck. My mom in a panic jumped out of this window:

She screamed at her papaw who was sitting there as if nothign was wrong. did I mention I got my temper honest?? Apparently she told papaw to get off his lazy A$$ and look for that baby for the love of heaven. Yeah that went over well I am sure, but apparently it was overlooked based on the situation. Aunt peg was of course found but not without tears and heart attacks by many around. she was too embarassed to tell anyone she could not get her pants up, she was only 4. thank heavens she was ok.
