I like the smell of candles in my home.
They smell better when the wax is melted whether from burning or from being on a warmer. They warm my living room in the evening and grace the dinner table on special occasions or when I feel like making an extra special meal for the fun of fancy eating with my hubby without the expense of going out. :)
A few days ago, my honey and I enjoyed our version of a fancy meal late in the evening after our little sweetie was tucked in for the night. After a nice meal we began to clean up. We blew out the two tall skinny candles. I took one candle out of the holder and found the second candle was stubborn coming out of the holder. Although I was gently twisting and pulling the candle to get it out, I became more frustrated and twisted and pulled harder. Low and behold it came out! It came out with just enough gusto that the other candle I was holding dripped a few drops of wax on the carpet in our dining area…oh crap.
I stopped and looked at the wax wondering what the heck I was going to do about that. My first reaction was to soak it up or rub it out. But as I have learned in the past, wax doesn't soak up like water and rubbing a spill only grinds the mess deeper into the carpet twines. As I was thinking about the best idea for cleaning it up, the wax cooled in the carpet. I could take a dull knife and scrape as much as I could out, but there would still be several noticeable wax spots. I consulted my mother. After raising six children, she is a whiz when it comes to all sorts of spills. She told me what to do - and the next day - Tada! It was gone! No trace of wax on that carpet!
Here's what she told me: Get a brown paper bag. Cut it into a few sheets. Lay a sheet over the wax and get a iron and set it between warm and hot. Press the iron on the bag over the wax spot. When the wax melts from the iron the brown paper bag wicks up the wax. Make sure to move around the paper bag after a short iron press. Keep pressing and moving the brown bag until there is nothing more to wick up. I learned two things: 1. Wait until the candle wax cools before moving them. 2. If I do spill wax on the carpet - it's not a problem.
I think tonight I will set up 3 candles instead of 2. ;)
