Can anyone recommend a book on discipline, particularly in the age group of pre-schoolers?  I will be searching on Barnes and Noble.

Thanks,

Kelly

I started this class that head start does with children with difficult behaviors and they call it  " The Incredible Years". They give out a book called "The Incredible Years"  a trouble-shooting guide for parents of chldren aged 2-8 years, its written by Carolyn Webster-Stratton, PH.D. Its a great book but I like the classes as much as the book. The first couple of chapters are called this: chapter one- How to play with your child, Chapter two- Positive attention, Encouragment and praise, Chapter 3- Tangible rewards, Incentives and celebrations, chap 4 Limit setting, chap 5 Ignore, chap 6 time out to calm down, chap 7 Natural and logical consequences, chap 8 teaching children to prblem solve, 9 helping children learn to regulate their emotions, 10 teaching chlidren friendship skills and ways to compe with peer problems, 11 controlling upsetting thoughts, 12 time out from stress and anger, 13 effective communication skills, 14 problem solving between adults, 15 working with teachers to prevent problems. You couls see if theres a incredible years class that is starting or when the next one would start and get the book for free or if not the book is very good. I gave you all the chapters that was listed. Hope I helped a bit.

I LOVE Kids, Parents and Power Struggles by Mary Kurcinka Sheedy. How to Talk So Your Kids Will Listen and Listen So Your Kids will Talk (Faber) is great too.  (I love Kids Are Worth It: Giving Your Child the Gift of Inner Discipline by Barabara Coloroso, but would recommend it after reading one of the other titles.)  The Incredible Years sounds good, I may look for it myself.  I think emotional coaching is the key to effective discipline/teaching,  Kurcinka has some great tips on this subject.  Have you seen what your library has, so you don't spend money on something that may not fit your parenting style?  Good luck.
