I am not a religious person. Never really have been. Went through a phase in my late teens when I was all about being Mormon, but then, the only reason I got baptized into it was that I had a huge crush on the missionary who did it. I know I know, you think I'm going to Hell. Whatever, think what you want, I don't believe in hell anyway. And as far as I'm concerned, if you don't believe it, it doesn't apply to you.
I don't believe in the existence of the god that Christians around the world believe in. I do believe there was a man named Jesus Christ, but do I believe that he died and rose from the dead? No. Can he turn water into wine and make blind men see? Likely, but that doesn't mean he's the son of God. He's just a miracle worker. So was Helen Keller's teacher.
What I want to know is, why is it that the images that Christians have of Jesus always have him looking like the drummer from Foghat? I mean, every picture his beard is neatly trimmed! Do you really think that Norelco was a popular gift in the BCs and the ADs?
But the real point of my writing this isn't to make Christians into non-believers. I don't really think I have that power and if I did, their belief wasn't that strong to begin with. I don't want to take anyone's beliefs away from them. My major problem as been that most of them, upon hearing that I don't believe, take it upon themselves to try to convert me. I try to be polite, nice and listen, but I end up arguing with them. They treat me like I'm a disease that needs to be eradicated! Then they start talking about how agnostics and atheists are ruining the world! Hey, I'm not one of those angry atheists that think that the Bible shouldn't be displayed at the courthouse or that "In God We Trust" shouldn't be on money and will gladly fight with anyone who says so. I think everyone has the right to believe what they want and shouldn't be persecuted for it. After all, isn't that what this country was founded on?
So I've told you what I DON'T believe, I guess I should tell you what I do...
I believe in karma and reincarnation, but I'm not Hindi or Buddhist.
I believe in the power of nature and duality of it all. I don't think there is just one male God...I believe there is a Goddess and a God. After all, isn't it kind of arrogant to say that only a MAN created the heavens and earth when it clearly takes the balance of both MALE and FEMALE to create something in nature? Everything from humans to daisies...
There is a balance. Night, day. Dry, wet. Hot, cold. The opposites never end and this is what I believe. I don't think there is such a thing as sin. There are simply good choices and bad choices and consequences for both.
Each soul on earth is trying to achieve a sort of spiritual nirvana and the Goddess and God who created us gave us a certain time frame to do that. (I don't know what that time is, but for argument's sake, let's say 75 years for each life.) That soul will cycle through an infinite number of lives until they achieve nirvana. This is done through life choices, either good or bad. Now, if, during one of those lives, the soul loses its physical form before that 75 years is up, the soul will be caught in limbo until that 75 years has been reached. This, to me, seems logical in explaining the existence of ghosts and spirits and why hauntings do not last more than a couple hundred years. Some souls just do not know they are supposed to move on to another life.
What I believe is logical to me, but ironically I'm not a very logical person. I'm a romantic, thinking first with my heart, then my head. I just needed to get this off my chest because it seems to be coming up more and more lately, especially with my loved ones.
I will not classify myself as anything because there is no ONE religion that I adhere to. What Wiccans believe seems most logical to me, but all the ritual and secrecy doesn't really suit me. One of the reason why Mormonism didn't suit me. A cult, to be sure.
What do you think?
Comments:
I'm a Unitarian Universalist. The religion finds atheists to be a valuable part of the group.
Just so ya know...not every Wiccan or even pagan (yes there are different types) are all that secret about it. Giggle.
I love what you said(and I, too, was mormon). I agree with most of what you believe in as well. LOVE the idea of why spirits and ghosts hang around, never thought of that.
