A CNN article interviewing several parents of Autistic kids, ranging in ages from 3 to 22.  Excellent article, very accurate.  Feel free to pass along if you like.

If there is something you do not understand about autism, don't be afraid to ask. As the mom of a son with moderate to severe autism, I know his behavior is "strange" to some people. I am not looking for excuses, but I do ask for understanding. I am approachable. I will answer questions .

The answer to one of the biggest I still hear (indirectly): NO, I will not keep my son at home unless he has no business being where I am.  Part of his education means going to restaurants and other public places so that he can learn proper bahavior with other people and situations.  Trust me, I am aware of his actions and I keep a good eye on him. I am usually talking to him and doing what needs to be done. If he needs to be taken outside so he can calm down, it will be done. Please do not stare at him as if he were a disease. He is not a brat, he is not a freak.  Either ask a question or go about your business.

AMEN! I get it all the time too. "If you know he's going to behave this way then leave him home." To which my response is "Maybe your intolerance is better left at home rather then my son."
