In the past week, I have noticed how many new things Cameron can do and do well. He is 10 1/2 months right now and he just seems to be growing up so fast all of a sudden. So, first, when his big brother and I were sitting on the floor rolling a ball back and forth, he came over and wanted to play too. I just told my son to roll the ball to him and I would help him roll it back...no need for that! He got all excited when he got the ball, picked it up and tried to eat it (of course) and then set it down, and gently pushed it back to his brother. I was so amazed! I thought it was an accident, so his brother rolled it back and he did the same thing, then the next few times he just stopped it and rolled it back. It was so cool! I tried to get a video of him doing it, but of course after he did it so many times, he didn't want to do it anymore. I will keep trying though- it's so cute.
Then, when he got bored rolling the ball, he went over to this toy we have, I forgot what it's called, but it looks like a gumball machine and you put those Roll-A-Round balls in it and then you push the handle and the spiral down...hopefully you get what I'm talking about. Well, he went over to play with this and he grabbed the balls, one in each hand, and he put them in the top and looked at me like, oh yea, I did it, with this big goofy grin, then he looked back at the toy and pushed the handle down and down came the first ball. Then he did it again and the next ball rolled down. It was so funny to watch him do that, he was so into it!
Now fast forward a few days to last night and we are sitting on the floor playing, and my 2 year old was on the couch right next to us playing with this talking book thing that he has. Cam crawled over there, pulled himself up and was playing with him. I remembered that we were supposed to call my hubby right around then, so I figured I would call while they played and then they would talk to him. As soon as I turned the phone on, Cam turned his head around, and started smiling and talking to me. So, I decided not to dial yet and instead I asked him if he wanted the phone, and he really did. I held the phone up and kept pushing the end button so it would make noise, but wouldn't be calling anyone or anything, and he would want to get it because he loves to push the buttons. He turned his body around and next thing I know, he let go of the couch and was standing there all by himself, balancing and all! He has been so scared to stand alone, so he hadn't done this before. I started talking to him and telling him to come get the phone and he just starts coming at me! I was so surprised! He got about 4 steps in and then he leaned forward too far and landed in my lap. I was so excited though!! I went to go get my camera so I could record it for my husband to see, and of course, he was done. He did it a few more times, but not more than 1 or 2 steps, and not nearly as balanced and controlled as the first time. It was so cool though! I thought he would be walking by 10 months because he has been trying to walk and cruising and everything for so long, but I was just two weeks off. His brother started walking at 11 months, so he may beat him...we'll see how fast he gets it down now...
And last but not least, after all the walking excitement last night, I went to feed Cam in his highchair. It was getting close to bed time and I had already put his cranky brother to bed, so it was just me and him. I was getting a spoonful of his banana/plum/grape concoction and I look up to see him trying to clap! I was so caught off guard, he had never tried to clap before, he hasn't ever showed any interest in clapping or anything, so I was surprised he was trying to clap. I put his food down and I started clapping with him and he started laughing and clapping his hands together. It was so funny. He had the best look on his face too! He thought that was just the coolest thing ever! So, now he can clap too! Out of nowhere.
After I put him to bed last night, I started thinking, why did he just all of a sudden want to do this? Why did he decide now was a good time to get his balance and take a few steps? Why does he want to clap? And then it occurred to me...we had started doing something different this week. Starting this past week, Cameron had his first ever "movement education" class on Tuesday and Thursday. It's got a funny name, but it's really like a P.E. type of class for little kids where they can just run around the gymnastics room at the YMCA and play with toys and do an obstacle course and have circle time singing songs and whatnot. He has also been doing swimming lessons for the past 7 weeks too, but when we sing in that class, I am holding him so I kind of control his movement that goes along with the songs.
Anyways, back to my thinking... He finally can sit on the floor by himself and listen to the songs and do his own movements like everyone else and this is probably where the clapping came from. We do a lot of clapping, so I am almost sure that this is where he recently learned to clap from. Also, during the 45 minute class, he spends a good amount of time pushing around the little walker type toys and watching other little kids his size (but older) walking around. Maybe this finally gave him the confidence he needed to just go for it. I'm assuming that's what it is, maybe not, but it is likely.
Ok, that's all I have to say about that. :)
