Preamble of the Libertarian Party Platform

As Libertarians, we seek a world of liberty; a world in which all individuals are sovereign over their own lives and no one is forced to sacrifice his or her values for the benefit of others.

We believe that respect for individual rights is the essential precondition for a free and prosperous world, that force and fraud must be banished from human relationships, and that only through freedom can peace and prosperity be realized.

Consequently, we defend each person's right to engage in any activity that is peaceful and honest, and welcome the diversity that freedom brings. The world we seek to build is one where individuals are free to follow their own dreams in their own ways, without interference from government or any authoritarian power...

The specific policies (outlined in the body of the platform) are not our goal, however. Our goal is nothing more nor less than a world set free in our lifetime, and it is to this end that we take these stands.

I never even knew I was Libertarian until I read the platform about a year ago.  Thanks for sharing!

If more people would JUST READ this and the Platform, I really think they would realize that they are LIBERTARIAN and not Liberal.  Libertarian is TRUE freedom.

Same here, Musik ... I'm sure many of my friends and family members' philosophies are also in line w/Libertarian ideals. I love spreading the word & seeing how shocked people are that there is a party that offers a sensible balance of social liberalism and fiscal conservatism. And just a group of all-around fantastic people (but what else would you expect from a group who subscribes to the 'live and let live" mentality?!).

I truly hope people just read this...give it a chance. Like Kate...there are probably a lot of people out there who believe in these ideals and just don't realize it because they've never had an opporutnity to put a name to it. It's all about balance and people will never know who we truly are (and even more important who THEY are) unless they give it chance. Voting popular!

Liberty should be our common ground! I do hope this encourages people to check out the LP.

I agree. It's not like we're asking to change the world over-night. We just want folks to study the facts and make up their own mind. It's a shame the two-party system won't even give us a chance to compete!

I love when I'm talking politics with someone and they realize they too are in fact Libertarian, just as someone helped me realize that not too long ago. =) Spread the word and good things will come!

way to go

thanks for posting!!! I've been able to share the libertarian ideals with others and I think have even swayed some of their thinking towards libertarianism! I think our goal should just be to put the message out there and let others "discover" it on their own.

I find the preamble inspirational - filled with hope and promise for a better world - and I especially appreciate the following: ”Our goal is nothing more nor less than a world set free in our lifetime..."

Apr. 8, 2009 at 1:23 PM I think the concept of Libertarianism is very good - but it really requires that people be good and moral in a self governing fashion.

I hope someday the people of our nation will be worthy of such a system. But I won't be switching to the libertarian party until I feel that's the case.

Great principles - thanks for sharing.
