I beg of you, if you are adamant on purchasing a purebred, please research the breed.  We didn't, and now we own dogs that do not mesh with our personalities and lifestyle.  It is a constant struggle to provide the love and attention they need.

We own two dogs.  Trina is a Bull Terrier and Muggsy is a Jack Russell.  Both are from the terrier lineage.

From Wikipedia:  A terrier is a dog of any one of many breeds or landraces of terrier type, which are typically small, wiry, very active and fearless dogs.

A little background...my husband and I are leisurely people.  We like to relax when we get home.  We work full time jobs which leaves a small window of time that we are actually home.  As you may know, we have a son that requires a ton of attention.  If we would have understood how demanding the terrier breed is, we would have probably reconsidered.

Some examples...

Energy - These dogs are full of endless energy.  When we take them for walks they can barely contain themselves.  While home they are constantly hunting and searching for a new adventure.

Dog parks - This one is a big "No".  We have tried it on more than one occasion and they always get aggressive.  Terriers are very territorial and do not do well with other dogs, especially when two males meet.

Recyclables - The two dogs double team the recycling bin often, pulling out the most attractive bottle and tearing it to pieces.  It makes for exciting weekend clean up.

Backyard - Trina has managed to create a dirt path around the perimeter of the back yard.  I have pictures is anyone is interested.  It amazes me that the dog could be so obsessive to travel the same exact path every single time she is outside.

Licking- Muggsy has this thing with licking metal.  Our friends suspect he has an iron deficiency, but we just think he is simply insane.

Water - Wherever there is water, Muggsy is there.  The dog once drank so much water from a hose battle that he lost control of his bladder and peed all over the house.

Hose- Muggsy has a strange obsession with the hose (probably linked to his obsession to water).  Whenever Danny puts a new nozzle on it the dog must shred it to smithereens.  Again, obsessive compulsive tendencies.

Direct T.V. remote - As I mentioned in another journal (pictures included), Trina loves to chew the direct T.V. remote.  We have gone through at least seven.  Christie helped me pinpoint the source of this addiction.  Trina apparently enjoys the soft rubber backing against her teeth as she chews away.

Stuffed animals - They don't stand a chance around Muggsy.  If he sees one he immediately starts humping it and then proceeds to rip all the stuffing out.  Do you think he has some sexual frustrations built up?

Next time you are in the market for a dog, consider a local animal shelter.  They are full of great animals that need love too.  Most likely the particular breed that was surrendered did not mesh with the previous owner.

You could bypass the research process by choosing a mutt.  From what I hear mutts make great pets, and they do not suffer nearly the amount of mental and physical issues that purebreds do.

Adoption is the route that we are going to take with our next dog.

For giggles, here are a couple pictures of my yard.

Research is always a good idea. I couldn't help but laugh. We have black lab mutt who is almost 2 that we got from the pound and a 3 month old pit bull puppy, which I beleive is also a mutt. And they have tons and tons of energy so I feel your pain. We didn't do any research before we got our lab and wished we had. I had no clue they are so full of energy. But we love our dogs.

I love my dogs too.  They just drive me batty sometimes.  I realize it is probably because we do not have the time to allow them to channel their energy as they need to.  Just look at my yard.  That is one big ball of energy unleashed on the earth.

I remember when we had to keep Buyou (who is half pit and half lab) entertained. I had to walk him three times a day and play ball with him. Manuel just hooked him up to his bike and had him pull him three times around our subdivision. That finally knocked him out.

YES THANK YOU!!!!

I work for a pit bull rescue and we get DAILY e-mails from people asking us to take their pit bulls; they can not deal with the dog aggression that is common with the breed and did not know about it before because they couldn't take 5 minutes to research a breed before obtaining one.  FABULOUS POST!

I love Trina.  She is my sweetheart.  Logan loves her too.  My only desire is that she wouldn't tear up our yard.  She is fun to watch though.  She is 45lbs of pure muscle and she jumps around like a rabbit.  That is probably why she tears up the lawn so easy.

Muggsy is more of the issue.  I fear that the dog has completely lost his mind.  He turned on me when I was pregnant with Logan and we haven't been able to keep him in the house since.  Growling, charging and biting don't go well with a 2 year old.

I have a Boston terrier.  I love her.  She can be active.  She is sweet and cuddly.

She does lick a lot though.  I just tell her to quit and she does.

Bonnie doesn't like being touched and she will bite (not draw blood) but act as if you are her pup and give you a warning growl and nip. I have had to keep Tomas away from her and show her who is boss of the house. It is very hard and demands a lot of your time. And time is something us momma's don't have a lot of sometimes.

So I agree that maybe you should take Mugsy to find a different family or something.
