Well, today was the day. I needed to run to the mall to use a Gap coupon that expired today, and my mother-in-law who is in town visiting from Atlanta suggested I make it a girl's day and just take Marley, while she watched Charlie. Marley loves those outings. So we headed to the mall, hit Gap Outlet first, and then had lunch at Chick-Fil-A. During lunch I asked Marley if she wanted to get her ears pierced. We had talked about it before, but I wanted to be honest with her, and let her know it hurts and let her make the decision that yes it will hurt, but that she wanted her ears pierced. Today she asked again would it hurt, and I said yes, it feels like a hard pinch on the earlobe. She said she just wanted to go look at the earrings in the store. So after lunch we went to Icing by Claire's and checked out their earrings. I showed her the chair where you get your ears pierced and the earrings you get to choose from on the day you actually get them pierced. She said she was scared and didn't want to, which was fine, so we left. I told her we'd wait until she was older and not so scared. We then went to Bath & Body Works to look at their oil scents, since they were on sale for $3. When we left, she said where are we going now? I told her home, unless she wanted to get her ears pierced, and she said "I do." I asked her repeatedly if she was sure, and told her it will hurt a little, but she said she was ready. We went back in and told the lady she had changed her mind. She picked out a light blue pair, since blue is her favorite color. The lady working said she was the only one today, so she would have to do them one at a time. She actually suggested we come back on the weekend when two people were working so they could be done simultaneously, but I knew we wouldn't come back. I told Marley, they had to be done one at a time, and she said she was okay with that. The lady working was pretty sure she'd only get one done, and told me I had to pay for two, and come back on another day if she could only get the one done today. Marley sat on my lap and the lady made all of the preparations. I could tell Marley was nervous but she said she was ready. The lady did the first one and Marley did not budge, she didn't cry or wince. I couldn't believe it. I told her she had to do the second one next and she was fine with it. She did the second one and it was finished without a tear. She picked out a blue lollipop to match the earrings, and we went and paid. As we were leaving she said "I liked getting my ears pierced." I asked her if it hurt, and she said "Not too bad." I guess I had made such a big deal about it in the past, that it was going to hurt, so she wasn't blind-sided, that I had set her expectations of the pain too high.
She is very proud of her earrings and said "Look mom, now we match." Since Charlie was born, we have been big on the whole "girl power" thing. We have a secret hand shake, and she says "girl power." Sometimes we let Charlie into out "girl power" club, but never daddy. I think she thinks the earrings are just another part of "girl power." I'm thinking maybe she has a high tolerance for pain, which will suit her well when she is a mommy pushing her babies out.
