Have you every started a garden with your children? It sure can be fun and, it turns out to be an everyday enjoyment for not only your child but, for you as well.
Create a small square foot garden 4' X 4'. I use the square foot garden method which consists of 8" treated boards cut to 4'. I used corner clamps to fasten them together into a square. Once they are together I fill them with top soil, compost, peat and, manure. Mix together and level the soil off.
Buy some plants from your local home store. The plants can be flowers, vegetables or, herbs. Maybe get some seeds, as children really like planting seeds. Buy a small shovel and, a pair of gloves for your child while you are there.
Dig a hole, plant the plant or the seeds and, water. Water the garden carefully each day until the plants are established or, the seeds have sprouted. Check the garden each day to discover what is growing. Your child will get enthused to see the plants growing or, the seeds have come up. Each day will be rewarding to the child and, to you too as you watch their little face gleam with excitement.
Now is the time to show them how to get their hands dirty. This is a terrific family project, one that will grow with your child. Try it, it is fun! Perfect quality time outdoors with the kids.
