A British Point Of View....Why Not?

Painfully thin with hip bones protruding from her red string bikini, this is the Miss Universe contestant who has reignited debate over underweight models.

Stephanie Naumoska, 19, has been described as 'skin and bones'  after appearing in the Australia finals - an event purporting to promote 'healthy, proportioned, bodies'.

But despite being  5ft11in - and 7st7lb - the model claims she eats well and is actually a healthy body weight.

The experts, however, beg to differ.

'She would be categorised as underweight and I would certainly want to be doing an assessment of her diet to make sure she doesn't have some type of eating disorder,' dietician Melanie McGrice told Australian newspapers.

'She needs blood tests, diet analysis and an overall assessment.

'There does appear to be significant muscle wasting on the upper arms and legs, and individuals with a healthy body mass index (BMI) do not have such protruding bones.'

Miss Naumoska's weight and height give her a BMI of just 15.1, well under the official 18 benchmark for malnutrition.

Australian Medical Association president Rosanna Capolingua, whose organisation represents Australian doctors, said the contest should impose a minimum BMI cut-off of 20.

'The most unhealthy part about it, though, is the image it is showing other young women who may view this as normal, when clearly it s not,' she said.

Yet another perfect role model for the Pro Ana/Mia community.

No doubt these photos will become "Thinspo" for the already very motivated by self-hate and body image obsessed anorexics.

Every aspect of this saddens me.

  • The girls (and sometimes boys) who will idolise her appearance.
  • The actual model herself who is convinced she is healthy.
  • The websites that promote this.

I can only hope people will see that this is not healthy nor an image that should be promoted.

My heart is with the girls who are struggling with anorexia and bulimia

No one looks like that naturally.  I'm sure someone will argue with me but they're not going to change my mind.  I've had friends who ate like truck drivers that just had fast metabolisms and they were very thin. But none like THAT.  Disgusting.

Thats what she says about herself. Apparently she has very fast metabolism. But, you'd have to have some kind of medical issue to have a metabolism that makes you look like that.
