Can anyone tell me how to not kill this plant? :p

My  husband brought home a houseplant conveniently labeled "Asstd Foilage" from Home Depot. Anyone know what the heck type of plant this is, and how to not kill it?

It came with little dry spots on the leaves, and its lower leaves are turning yellow and falling off. I've been following the Home Depot instructions of "half cup of water a week", but am not sure if they gave me the right instructions or not. I'm also not sure if this plant needs a bigger pot, or if it likes to be rootbound, because I don't know what type of plant it is?

Babies and dogs are easier than houseplants. :p

Sorry- I just made a bunch of my plants homeless.  Usually, I murder anything green.  I've got a black thumb of death.
