When it's after 10pm and the phone rings, you know it's a crisis of some kind.  Last night it was Scott, my best friend Penny's hubby, calling at midnight to ask me to run over and watch the boys.  Penny had fallen and broken her ankle.

How, you may be wondering, how does someone break their ankle at 12am?  No, they weren't gettin' freaky in the bedroom - it was actually a very dumb accident.  Hudson, their youngest, had fallen asleep in Scott and Pen's bed.  Penny decided to carry Hudson down the hall to his own bed.  In the process of moving him, Penny tripped over one of the boys shoes that was left in the hallway (hadn't she told them a million times NOT to leave them there!) and in trying not to drop/throw Hudson into the wall, Penny fell and broke her ankle.  She also dislocated the tibia at the ankle.

Scott wanted to take her to the hospital but she insisted he call an ambulance.  Really, that was the best course of action because they were upstairs and there was no way she was going to allow him to move her and drive her in their pickup truck.  I got there just as the ambulance was pulling away.  Just in time to dry up all the tears from the screaming, truamatized boys.  (Her son's are age 13yrs, 10 years and 5 years old.)

I stayed until Scott and Pen got back from the hospital - about 7am.  They had casted Pen's foot but tomorrow she goes to an orthopedist so he can assess the damage and they can set a surgery date. Pen has to have some plates and screws implanted to make her ankle useable again.  In one dumb fall, she actually managed to get  3 fractures, tore her tendons and tore the ligaments attaching the ankle to the leg.  I saw the x-rays.  They were pretty gnarly.

So poor Pen is gonna have surgery and be in a cast for atleast six weeks.  Then she'll have to have some serious physical therapy too.  Her summer is really going to suck.

I bet that's the last time the boys leave their shoes out.
