It's almost Cinco De Mayo! A time to celebrate for many, but I am thinking about my friend, who lost her 15 year old daughter on May 5th 2 years ago.
Yes, it's another sad story about drinking and Driving. Please remind your kids to not drive drunk, to not ride in a car with a friend who has been drinking, even if they say they are "OKay", and to Always wear their seat belts!!
My friend's daughter, Felicia, had not been drinking. But she got in a car with a 17 year old who had been drinking. She rode in the back, holding down the innertubes rather than wearing a seat belt. (they had been tubing at the river) The accident threw Felicia from the suv and killed her instantly.
Felicia was the oldest of 4 children. Her youngest sister and my daughter were best friends, and Felicia had occasionally babysat my children for me. We were having a BBQ at my apartment when her mom got the confused text message from a friend at the scene. I spent that Cinco De Mayo trying to help comfort a grieving mother and her 3 confused, scared children, as well as explaining things to my children who wanted to know why their friends were crying. Please talk to your kids about this. Even if they trust their friends completley, accidents can and WILL happen if alcohol is involved.
Rest in Peace, Felicia, we miss you!
Here's an article about the accident;

* note - The 17 year old drunk driver only ended up serving 1 day in jail, and paying some fines. The DA decided it would be better to waste 2 years trying to convict the other driver, who was not at fault and not legally drunk. Last month the trial finally ended and he was cleared of all charges, but since they had already agreed to not charge the 17 yr old drunk driver with anything, she pretty much got away with it. Justice was never really served in this case, and sadly, this is the case with a lot of crimes nowadays.

That's just terrible Wendy. My prayers will be with your friend's family. As you know, my son lost one of his best friends a year ago yesterday to another senseless tragedy...teenage suicide. I cannot imagine losing a child, but losing a child in a way that could have easily been avoided & never seeing justice done...that's just got to be the worst!
