World Ocean Day is an annual Ocean awareness event sponsored by The Ocean Network, which is a group of many partners including zoos, aquariums, businesses and conservationists. This year's theme is "One ocean, one climate, one future". Recently the United Nations designated World Ocean Day an official awareness day! World Ocean Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate the ocean and our connection to it.

Have youever seen a picture of the Earth from space? The vastness of the oceans is the reason the Earth is nicknamed "the pale blue dot". It is a defining feature of our planet. The ONLY planet that can sustain human life.

According to their website, the world's ocean:
Generates most of the oxygen we breathe, helps feed us, regulates our climate, cleans the water we drink, offers us a pharmacopoeia of potential medicines, and provides limitless inspiration. I am sure it does many more things we may often take for granted., such as providing limitless beauty, aiding in long distance transportation, and providing educational and vacation opportunities.

It's up to us to preserve our oceans for future generations by educating ourselves and participating in conservation efforts by changing our habits. There are a few events worldwide to help you do these things. Chances are, your kids would love to participate in something educational and fun, such as going to your local aquarium to learn about the oceans and the animals that live there. Check out these other great ideas, perfect for getting the school involved! You can do these anytime, it is never too late to learn about the environment (or start planning for next year).
Our water-friends THANK YOU!!

You've just inspired me to take the family and finally visit the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, NJ. I've always wanted to go, not sure why I haven't yet made the trip!
The oceans are fascinating to me, but I must admit - frightening too. The power of so much water is awe inspiring!

Great post!
I love the ocean. That explains why I am still in S. Fl. The smell of the crashing waves is very therapeutic. Whenever I am super stressed out I take a walk on the pier. It works every time.
