My BIL foudn this in a bush outsid eof our house! It's absolutely beautiful! I was hoping some one could give me a name for this.YOu know like Japanese moth, monarch butterfly, for example. It is bigger then my hand. He wouldn't fly or couldn't fly away. There were big mean boys that wouldn't leave him a lone after we found him. So we brought him in to keep him from being destroyed. What would it need to eat? When should I release again? If you do know what it is please include a link of info/pics about it with your response!

Thanks

I would encourage you to release it as soon as possible, you have photo's of it, for it to complete it's life's cycle/purpose I would suggest letting it go.  Interfearing beyond saving it from the kids messing with it will just add to it's stress.

WAYS MOTHS PROTECT THEMSELVES

Polyphemus Moth, Antheraea polyphemus, image courtesy of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, photo by James LeupoldMoths protect themselves from predators in some interesting ways. For example, can you figure out how  the Polyphemus Moth, Antheraea polyphemus, illustrated at the left, might cause a hungry bird to go away? Notice how this moth's hindwings are adorned with what appears to be eyes glaring at us. Well, if you were a bird about to pounce on the poor Polyphemus, and the Polyphemus opened its wings and those big yellow eyes were suddenly staring at you, wouldn't you think twice about gobbling it up?

I found this picture and I think it looks the same. It is a Polyphemus moth.

It's called a brown luna moth, we have a lot of those around here. They marks on it are suppose to look like predator eyes to scare away birds. they are moths not butterflies. And they only live for about a week so you should let him go now. They also need flower necter so unless you can out a whole plant with flowers in the container he will strave and die. There are alot of photos of differant variations and colors of them on google, try this link...

Hope it helps!

There are even butterflies then can sorta fold themselves to to look like a spider. Cool huh? We live in the country and have a lot of unusual moths and butterflies. Even ones that look like tree bark to hide from birds to bright red, orange, and yellowish ones that look like tigers. Can ya tell I was a total tomboy growing up *LOL*?
