I do not want to be bashed for this but I have to write it.
I think a lot of times kids and adults get misdianosed with Autism, ADD, ADHD, Bi-Polar, Depression. I am sure there are so many other things that get misdiagnosed all the time in people.
I always knew I was depressed and after about 10 years or so I fount out I was bi-polar. This was after my sister kept telling me I was. I didn't want to believe her about it. She kept telling me my signs though. I went to my reg doc and he would not refill my meds from the doc before and sent me to a therapist who did say I was bi-polar. I started new meds and WOW yes I am Bi-polar. I use to be ashamed because I thought people would think I was a fruit cake. People with Bi-Polar are not fruit cakes and I AM BI-POLAR!!! I dont' care who knows now. So thanks sis with out you telling me over and over who knows what would have happened with me.
Some adults on here say that they are having a bad day so they think they are bi-polar or suffer from depression. Oh no that is not the case. It's not just a one day thing. If you think you are go to a psychiatrist and then get a second opinion. A LOT of doctors are quick to say yes you are. Same with ADD and ADHD it is hard to tell if a child is being a kid or if they even need meds. Second opinions again. Most regular doctors can not tell you if your child has any problems they should refer you to a psychiatrist to get help. If you think yourself or your child have problems get them double checked by a psychiatrist NOT the regular doctor. Wouldn't you want to be 100% sure on what they say. This is your child or yourself you are talking about. I know when my son was told he was ADD I had him double checked. Now them telling me I was Bi-polar no I did not get double checked. I knew it but I just wanted to deny it. Long story on how I knew. I was always depressed as a teen. I have tried to kill myself several times. I have blacked out and chased my sister down the hall w a knife. Again sorry sis. Other things were crying one minute then laughing. Very moody. NOT just everyday being moody. It is a roller coaster ride. Even if I am a couple hrs late on taking my meds at night I can tell and so can the people around me.
So pretty much I think things are overly dianosed in the world. Get second opinions from the right doctors. What harm does that do anyways except knowing for sure. Even if the person has the signs does not mean they are... That is what the psychiatrist is for!
Not all kids need medicine. Some can cope with it and the parents learn how to cope with things along with the child. Going to the psychiatrist can help you with this.
Thanks!

Thank you. I got a second opinion (Psychologist) for my son so I knew his diagnosis was good. Last year I went for counseling and the first thing I mentioned was I might be bi-polar. After reviewing my file and talking to me she said I'm not and my symptoms are probably ADHD, but my doctor won't prescribe anything. I'm making my zoloft last as long as possible. It's nice to know someone else out there understands.
My son has been diagnosed three different times by three different doctors in three different fields. He is autistic. I too encourage people to get that second opinion. Especially if the first doctor makes you fell like crap. But I think the second opinion should be to confirm or discredit the first diagnosis, not a parent trying to find someone to tell them their child is normal.
ITA with you Shell- especially with mental health disorders. Some docs are quick to medicate for even things such as SAD- seasonal affective disorder- when one of those lights would help during the winter months.
Even if it is a mental health disorder several of them, such as depression, can be treated without medication unless it's severe. But doctors can only do what we tell them we need to have done- if it's a mental health issue people should opt to see a psychiatrist first instead of a regular doc who is more likely to deal with colds and the flu then mental health.
Good post...I am glad you were properly diagnosed. It is important to get diagnosed correctly. Thanks for the links!
I agree about getting a proper diagnosis from the proper practioners. People, some things shouldn't be diagnosed by a general practioner! It's a sign to get it checked out by specialists who studied this field and work with it regularly!
I agree, but at the same time, do not wait in denial about how you are feeling, go and see a professional, do not wait like i did until you are completely unable to function. I was hospitalized for a week until i was stabilized for my depression. not on suicide watch mind you, suicide wasnt an issue, but my anxiety attacks were so bad and so frequent that i completely quit eating and sleeping for 2 weeks before my hubby dragged me to a therapist who put me in a psych hospital so i could see a psychiatrist asap. even my dad was freaking out and he never freaks, he was yelling and basically force feeding me before they admitted me. now on meds i am doing better, but everyday is still a struggle.

This is not to anyone on here I just want to help get the word out that second opinions are better than one. People owe that to their kids to be sure.
Great info on the sites that are linked above. I hope it helps a lot of moms out.
