I wasn't sure if I wanted to cloth diaper the new baby. Since Oli was 10 months old, I started using Kushies and some Bumkins AIO diapers to cut on cost of buying so many diapers and to do my part for the environment. Well, I thought those diapers were the bomb and then I bought some higher end diapers (Happy Heinies, BumGenius 3.0 and Natures Love). Now I hate my Kushies! I've been a bit put off by all of the information on line on how to wash your diapers and make them and blah blah blah. I was starting to think that it wasn't worth cloth diapering the new baby if it's that much work. Well, I'm glad I kept doing research and chilled out a bit about the science of washing them. I started a new hobby of making my own! It's been fun and relaxing...unless the sewing machine bunches the thread for whatever reason. (I'm not a seamstress.)
I started wanting to make them when I bought a BumGenius fitted diaper for the newborn. It was made with soft bamboo terry and I can't believe it was $12.75 and I still needed a liner! Sheesh! I looked at it and thought it would be easy to duplicate. I bought a yard of bamboo terry cloth online and have made 6 more fitteds already with it. That yard cost me $12! Talk about a savings! I still have more cuts on that yard too! I've stretched it a bit by putting flannel as the outer and the bamboo inner to touch the baby's skin and I've even moved on to AIO and pockets. I've made 4 pockets for Oli to make sure that they worked before I continued making the newborn diapers. With some mistakes made and modificatiions, I finally have some working AIO and pocket diapers! It's really exciting to me that I accomplished something like this! I now have 4 pockets for Oli's size, 6 fitted newborn diapers and 5 pocket/AIO diapers for the newborn. I'm set; however I want to make 2-3 more fitteds for the newborn and I was thinking about making a fleece cover also.
Some of my friends have asked me to make some diapers. It's a good thing...becauseI don't think that I really need too many more for my own use and I'm having so much fun making them! I'm excited to make some girly prints too!

How are you going to wash them? I need to figure out what works for us - the ammonia is killing me, and I'm not sure how to get rid of it or what caused it! All of the weird "stripping" procedures seem weird to me.
