Baby Sign Language is an incredible tool for a daycare center. It gives
all the families the benefits of signing while adding even more for the
Center.
Many parents learn to tell their baby's "tired" cry from
their "hungry" or "hold me" cry. I know one of my biggest concerns
leaving my baby with anyone is that they won't understand my baby's
needs like I do. It can be difficult for the staff or even one worker
at a daycare center to learn each baby's different cries... and then
there's the fact that they are still having to cry to get what they
need.
Baby Sign Language serves as a universal language for a
daycare center and reduces the need for any tears at all! Babies can
communicate their needs in a way all the staff can understand while
getting all the educational and developmental benefits Baby Sign
Language has to offer.
I am fortunate enough to be able to stay
home with my boys like I've always wanted, teaching what I love part
time. I have never had to leave my kids with anyone other than family
and my family is all very educated in the Baby Sign Language my kids
use until they can talk. I can tell you right now that I wouldn't even
consider leaving my non-verbal baby with a sitter or daycare that
didn't know or wasn't open to learning Baby Sign Language. To me it
would be like leaving a talking child with a sitter that spoke a
completely different language and didn't understand any English. There
is bound to be unnecessary frustrations and tears. If I can prevent my
baby from being upset, ensure his needs are taken care of promptly then
I will.
Many people think nothing of a 6 month old baby crying
to say he's hungry or wants Mommy. But he doesn't have to cry to tell
you this! Babies as young as 6 months can sign to tell you what they
need instead of cry.
Now there is a difference between needs and
wants. I expect needs to be taken care of as quickly as a caretaker is
able. I don't expect every want to be granted, but just understanding
them can help anyone understand a child's mood, personality and world
better or figure out an underlying need.
I think every daycare
should learn and teach Baby Sign Language. I do my part by training as
many centers as I can and educating parents on the benefits it has. My
job is making happier babies and this is a very important part of my
job :)
