Dover’s two boxes of 545 pairs of Underwear, 21 Training Bras, and 13
Undershirts made it to Kenya last month. This is what it looked like
after I emptied the boxes. It doesn’t look like much from this angle,
but it was a few feet high!! With the help of my kids and the
children on the block, we unpacked them, sized them, packed them up
along with 1,400 more pairs, and I headed off to Kenya.
We visited two IDP camps the first day we arrived. The photo below is of Shalom City refugee camp. It houses approximately 16,000 people. We were able to give every child a new pair of underwear.
I know it can sound silly. Really? Underwear? When you have lost everything, and I mean everything, a new pair of underwear is a wonderful gift. My friend Gladys, who works for VICDA, had called me a few weeks before my arrival, asking me if I could bring underwear on my next trip. She explained to me that at these refugee camps, the children are sometimes running around naked and that underwear could be a wonderful solution. I couldn’t have agreed more.
I just wanted to say THANKS to Barbara Dover, and the other amazing and sometimes anonymous Underwear donors, who helped making sure that all the children were covered! If you would like to see more photos from this trip, please check out Mothers Fighting For Others Flickr account.
