Beating him while he was unconscious? That's the right thing? I fully agree with his 20 year sentence for hitting the other cop. People who cause high speed chases have no care for anyone but themselves--they're a menace to society. But beating someone who has just been thrown out of a vehicle that has rolled over several times and who is just lying there on the ground is NOT ok. It is NOT the right thing. Ever.
The police are there for protection, not abuse. I know it is not an easy job. They are put in harm's way on a daily basis and deal with people who hate and distrust them and would likely kill them given half a chance. However, it is also their job to rise above that and be BETTER than the criminals. Beating an unconscious man is far from that. The five officers in question need counseling and anger management and do not need a badge and a gun at the moment.
I don't necessarily think that they did the right thing. I mean police beatings are never right. BUT they should have just shot the asshole. He nearly hit the one officer. They were defending their own. Beating him while he is unconcious is cowardly.
Heat of the moment people. Imagine the radio chatter "Officer down" they saw him aim for the cop...
He wasn't aiming a gun at them, so they couldn't have shot at him, that part of their training held the fore.
I truly don't blame them, not sure they should have been fired.
I dont necessarily agree with what they did, but think about the adrenline and how it felt to watch this guy run over a fellow officer...I don't agree with it-but given the same situation it would have been hard for me not to do the same...
I can understand how it happened. If he wasn't unconcious and they stopped to check if he was ("like they must do every time a person is outside of a car and on the ground after a chase"), he most likely would have gotten up and run away into the woods or tried to injure another officer.
What a tough situation. I can't begin to imagine the adreneline going through these guys after watching their friend and fellow officer take a hit like that. Honestly, I don't have a whole lot of pity for the guy being beaten. He put a lot of peoples lives at risk running from the cops the way he was. That being said..... beating an unconcious man was obviously wrong...
I watched the beating portion several times over and I can pick out three officers for sure that I feel should have been dealt with, two of those I think firing was the best choice because they continued beating the man visciously even when it was clear his condition (the first and third officer to reach the man, if you want to know who), the third I probably would have gone for a suspension without pay for x amount of time (6 months?) and counselling instead of firing them because he did get down and hit the man twice, but not with the same enthusiasm as the first two I mentioned. The final two officers did hit the man, but it was more of a half-heart kick than the uncontrolled beating the others were giving (refering to the 2nd and 5th officers to get to him)... I think conselling would have been sufficient for them. IMO they at least showed some restraint compaired to the others.
I have absolutely no sympathy for the guy who was beaten, he endangered the lives of everyone in his proximity during the chase and, I assume, broke the law prior to that (otherwise he wouldn't have been running).
Nevertheless, police should be able to handle that stuff without losing their cool. They do have a very difficult job. There is a lot of hostility directed toward them at times, and they're often dealing with pretty crazy people - not certifiable, but antisocial. But that's generally known when you take on the job and being able to maintain your equilibrium despite that. should be part of the eligibility requirements. Just like someone who faints at the site of blood wouldn't make a good trauma center doctor, neither is a person who can't keep their cool qualified for that type of police work.
That said - I admire anyone (almost) who would take on the job at all. I'm sure it's thankless most of the time, and in some environments I'm also sure that no matter what you do it doesn't seem to make a difference. One of the most frustrating jobs on earth. Especially when, honestly, some of the guys they deal with no doubt deserve everything they get and, sometimes, they'll go to court and get off scott free. But, that's another story.
I'm sorry the police lost their jobs over this, but those are the rules and if we compromise with them things could eventually get so out of hand that police could eventually become just as dangerous as the criminals - even to law-abiding citizens.
The good news? In this case, at least the justice system worked; the guy got 20 years. Too bad the police involved don't have a suspension/rehabilitation route they can take instead of losing their jobs entirely.
HOLY CRAP!! that was scary watching that police officer get hit bc of that crazy driver... he must have been on the run for a reason, and I agree with pp's that I have no pity for the guy that was beaten bc he shouldnt have been evading police in the first place... Of course the officers were wrong to do that, BUT he shouldnt have been driving like that and putting innocent ppl at risk either... My dad is a police officer and I have tons of respect for them and the hard job they do to keep us all safe... and yeah the adrenaline pumping through their veins, can u imagine what it's like to have that kind of high risk job, not knowing what each day brings??

What they did was wrong, but could you imagine, [ I for one can not ] where their state of mind is at this point? Or the blood pressure level of these officers when this finally came to a stop? Cops do a hard job, I can honestly say that I dont know how I would have reacted at that moment..
