Yesterday we went to a Memorial Day parade in the town that my husband grew up in. My husband's niece was performing in the parade, and we wanted the kids to go to just because it was Memorial Day and pay tribute to our fallen heroes. The beginning of the parade, the local high school ROTC did a beautiful ceremony and placed a ceremonial wreath on the war memorial in front of the police station and the marching band played "The Star Spangled Banner" and "Taps". I found it very moving and was standing there with tears streaming down my face. At the same time I was disgusted with the behavior of some of the people there!! About 10% of the people didn't even BOTHER to stand during the National Anthem!! I don't know about ya'll, but when I  was growing up, I was taught that you stand with your hand over your heart during the National Anthem, and remove your hat if you're wearing one. My own SIL didn't even stand, I don't know what her problem was. ( Obviously, if you're physically unable to stand, that's a different story). To make matters worse, behind me were some drunken idiots laughing and yelling during the National Anthem!!! If the only reason you came to the parade was to get drunk and act like a donkey's behind, you could have done that at home.  If you can't keep your drunken mouth shut for at least 3 minutes while the National Anthem is being played and sung, then you need to go back in the bar you stumbled out of and make your noise in there. There's plenty of time for laughter and celebration, but during the National Anthem, there needs to be respect shown for the men and women who gave their lives for this country.

Thanks, I'm going to get off my soapbox now!!

A-Freaking Men!  I still stand for our national anthem, the pledge of allegience and when our nations flag passes by.  My children do too.  And so does my husband.  Doing the anthem we put our hand over our heart and sing along.  I love my nation and I want people to know it.  Good post.

Voted up.

Thanks for a great post.  It's time for Americans to love and respect their country again.  What has happened to pride in our country?

You are so rightt!!  I was watching the Indy 500 on Sunday and they did a tribute to the soldiers then they played the National Anthem.  I couldn't believe it, I saw NOT ONE person singing along!!  NOT ONE PERSON!!!

Then on Memorial Day, we were the ONLY ONES on our street with an extra flag out.  My son is a soldier and has just finishing serving his 2nd tour to Iraq & we fly a flag all the time.  But for the Memorial Day, I put an extra flag out by our mailbox but NO ONE else did!  I guess it was just a 3 day holiday for them!!  So sad!!!

This is a wonderful post and you are teaching your children the right way, if only so many more would!!!

agreed. Even when i hear a patriotic song on the radio, i wont change the channel, or talk or anything. I also teach my daughter about respecting the flag, and while shes just 2, she has a great understanding b/c her gpa is at the Florida National Cemetary and we visit often.

Thank you for this post! As a Patriot Guard Rider, I am appalled at how many people show disrespect to our flag, anthem, and veterans. My family and I will always stand for the flag/anthem.

While I respect others choice not to stand (I live in a community with a large JV population), it doesn't sound as if a majority of the people at that event exercised their right not to stand for religious beliefs. That is too bad so many people have lost sight of the meaning and need for reflection on our memorial holidays. Good for you for showing your kids the true meaning of respect. Hugs!
