WERNERSVILLE, Pa. - Jon, Kate and their eight children have attracted a huge TV audience, screaming tabloid headlines and, now, a state labor investigation.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor says it's looking into whether the hit reality show "Jon & Kate Plus 8" is complying with child labor laws.

The TLC series follows Jon and Kate Gosselin as they raise their eight young children, including 8-year-old twins and sextuplets who just turned 5. The show drew nearly 10 million viewers for its fifth-season premiere Monday following reports of trouble in the Gosselins' marriage.

Labor Department spokesman Justin Fleming tells The Associated Press that the department is looking into a complaint against the show.

TLC says it "fully complies" with state laws and regulations.

I have to wonder why they are investigating after 4 seasons. To me, it looks like they are riding on the coattails of the shows bad publicity.

Only if they allow it to.  You can work through anything if you want it bad enough.  If they want to save their marriage, all they have to do is tell the cameras to take a hike and start over.

I just hope that as a family they make it through all this mess. It sucks for all of them. Personally I do think Kate is getting a big head and Jon is getting pushed to the side. They will have to fight for a normal life after the show finally ends. And this whole labor mess sounds a bit fishy! lol

I agree with the other mamas. They seem to be more focused on their public reputations than with what is best for their family.

Q: If a student wants to work as a model or performer for theater, television or the movies, what permit is needed?

A: The Department of Labor and Industry issues a Special Performance Permit for the employment of minors seven (7) to eighteen (18) years of age.  This permit is for theatrical productions, musical recitals or concerts, entertainment acts, modeling, radio, television, motion picture making, or in other similar forms or media of entertainment to be performed in Pennsylvania.  Children younger than seven (7) may be issued this permit to work in film or video productions, but not still photography.

If the performance or rehearsals will require any absence from school, there is a section on this permit that requires the signature of the building principal and work permit issuing officer.  Arrangements have to be made to ensure that participating in the performances will not interfere with the student’s academic progress.   To obtain an application for this permit, or for additional information, contact the Department of Labor and Industry at 1-800-932-0665.

The kids only know what it's like to have cameras following them around... they're smart, outgoing, fantastic little kids. This IS their "normal", and while it may not be for everyone, THEY seem to be flourishing. It has not compromised their ability to learn, and has given them the opportunity to do things that without the show, they'd NEVER have been able to afford to do. I'm just saddened by the fact that there are so many people out there that are so eager to see Kate fall on her face, that they're making such a big deal out of their marital issues. It's going to destroy that family.

Nobody is investigating Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's kids, and THEY have photographers in THEIR faces everywhere they go...
