Burned Pit Bull Put Down

Please say a prayer for her little soul!

The two-year-old pit bull badly burned earlier this week has died.

Officials Main Line Animal Rescue the Pennsylvania animal shelter where the dog was being treated confirm that the dog was euthanized.

Veteranarians had said that the dog's injuries were very severe.

Authorities say the animal was intentionally set on fire earlier in southwest Baltimore earlier this week.

Police still don't have any suspects in what animal workers say is the worst case of animal cruelty they've seen in some time.

Unthinkable cruelty that's how many describe what happened to a dog named Phoenix.
She was doused with gasoline and set on fire.
Weijia Jiang reports the dog is still recovering.
Although the dog's spirits are still high veterinarians say infections are a major obstacle and she may not make it through.
Not a spot on the pit bull's body was spared.

"Somebody obviously covered her in gasoline and lit her on fire," said Jennifer Meade-Brause,Executive Director of BARCS, Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter.

"Her tongue, her eyes, her pads are scorched off, her vulva, unbelievable. We are speechless, and overwhelmed with emotion," said Dr. Marcella Bonner of Swan Animal Hospital.

After treating the dog in Baltimore, Dr. Bonner sent it to a special care facility in Pennsylvania.

Renamed Miss Mercy the 2-year-old pit bull is on a feeding tube and K-9 plasma.

She's on several pain medications and veterinarians have removed her bandages.

The dog is alive thanks to Baltimore Police officer Syreeta Teel who was patrolling Presbury Street.

"We saw this dog in flames, he was screaming and rolling around fully in flames," said Teel. "It was sad because I'd never heard a dog make the sound, the scream he made. I've never heard it before and it was just cruel."

"We could smell it in the air," said Linda Mackey a witness.

Linda Mackey and Meredith Sickle were volunteering in the neighborhood when they noticed a horrifying ball of flames.

"We were so appalled anything like that could happen and there were actually people in the street standing and laughing like it was entertainment for them," said Sickle.

Bonner says she's handled several similar cases in the past.

Her pet "Apple" was also set on fire.

Bonner warns animal cruelty is widespread but it can be prevented.

"This is an epidemic, do something about it. There's power in numbers, power if we all ban together as a community to get this to stop," she said.

As for "Miss Mercy" vets say it's too early to tell whether she'll survive.

A board of surgeons will examine the dog later this evening. If her condition worsens, they will consider putting her down.

Police  have no leads in this devastating case, they urge anyone with information to come forward.

Mercy the burned Pit Bull - Donations needed!!
This image is very disturbing, but it shows what bad shape this poor dog is in. Please share with your animal loving friends.
Main Line Animal Rescue took this poor girl in and it would be wonderful if folks could donate to her care.  No amount is too small - every cent helps and is appreciated.
Mercy is in the hospital, and is being treated for the burns that cover virtually her entire body.  The pain this poor girl has endured is unimaginable. She got through the night and is holding her own.

She is now getting the best possible care thanks to Main Line Animal Rescue.  Mercy is in great hands and we are hoping that she will survive.  However, the medical bills will be staggering.  Please consider making a donation to help defray the costs.  No amount is too small.

Thanks...

I saw this the other day. :(  Thank you for posting it though.

America needs to wake up and see that as horrible as this is, this (and worse things, if you can imagine that)  is happening to pit bulls in this country on a daily basis.  The are truly the VICTIMS and man is the BEAST, not the other way around.

That's just sick and what sickens me more is there will be those that say so it's just a pitt bull or they all need to die any way ,....those people I really do have to pray they get a brain..

I hope the dog pulls through, any word on if they found out who the "owner" was and if anyone will have to pay for this crime??

As cruel as the original crime was, it's my personal opinion that it's just as cruel to not put the poor thing down. It will never live a normal dogs life, so why make it suffer through so much more pain?

Mommaturbo as a pit bull rescuer who have seen dogs in this condition and others worse come through on a first hand basis I can honestly tell you that the great majority of these dogs DO bounce back and live normal, happy lives.
