As the night progresses, it is getting worse. My 9 month old baby girl is incredibly sick. They have been trying to start an IV and after 8 sticks and several different nurses they have given up until the NICU doctor can come up and try to start it. It is absolutely critical that we get this IV in ASAP because she is extremely dehydrated and needs to get the IV antibiotics to treat the meningitis that they think she has. Kassidy is fighting so hard and is still trying to be happy. She is usually a very happy baby and smiles and laughs all the time even when she is sick. She's smiled twice today and is incredibly hard to wake up. When she is awake she is crying constantly. I just want my happy baby back. Please vote this popular and pray for my baby. The doctors have said that we need God's help to get her through this as she has been sick for almost a week now and no one would listen to me until today when I sat in the pediatrician's office until they did more tests. Again, all I am asking for is prayers for my little girl's speedy recovery. Thank you all and God bless!
Kassidy is very lethargic this morning. They are going to try to get an IV in again this morning. After that they plan to sedate her and do the lumbar puncture (spinal tap) to try to figure out what is going on in her poor little body. They are saying it is probably Meningitis in her spinal fluid and all we can do is pray that it hasn't gotten to her brain yet. I will update again later when we know more from the lumbar puncture. Thank you for all of the prayers!
We just got the results back from the Lumbar Puncture....it was all negative!!!!! The doctors are baffled and have no idea how she doesn't have an infection in the spinal fluid but they are going to start looking elsewhere in her body tomorrow to try to find the source of the infection. She is still not eating well and despite IV fluids going since 8:30 AM, has not had a wet diaper today. She did drink a few ounces earlier but she is very tired after the sedation for the Lumbar Puncture. Again, thank you for all your prayers and keep 'em coming! We really appreciate the prayers and support.
Yes, I have another update. Hopefully no one is getting irritated but I have found that as I keep updating Moms are relating things to their own experiences and any input is greatly appreciated as we have no idea what is going on. Kassidy has only had one wet diaper today and it was very small. They have been giving her IV fluids for most of the day and she doesn't appear dehydrated so they decided to explore why she is not peeing. Her bladder was very full and they cathed her and emptied it. We are scheduled for an ultrasound at 10PM to see if there is anything that might give us some more insight.
Well we are back from ultrasound. They didn't expect to get any results back until morning but the nurse just came in and said that they have to do some more lab work to try to correlate some of the findings from the ultrasound. They will be doing this ASAP and hopefully we'll have those labs and a conclusion in the next few hours. I'll post more when I know more.....sorry I just had to vent this fear and everyone here is sleeping, but of course I haven't slept in 2 days :) the things we do for our children!!!!! A mother's will and determination is amazing when it comes to your child....I never believed this until Kassidy got sick.
The renal ultrasound showed a spot on Kassidy's left kidney. The resident said that we will most likely do some more testing tomorrow (I guess technicall today--Wednesday) to figure out what this spot is. . . . I'll know more in the morning when her pediatrician makes rounds.
The pediatrician was in this morning and they are completely baffled. They contacted the kidney specialist and they are also baffled. She is not producing the amount of urine that she should be but her kidney function tests are coming back ok. She is retaining fluid....gained 2 pounds in 24 hours! Kassidy's eye is now swollen shut but they said that is most likely from the fluid retention. The kidney specialist will be up this afternoon to see if they ave any ideas. Kassidy is still absolutely miserable and seems to be getting worse. I pray they find out what is going on soon so she can get to feeling better. I'll post another update as soon as I know more.

This is the best smile I can get from her today.

This is her before this horrible infection....such a happy beautiful baby!!!!!

I completely understand what you are going through. In february, my son got incredibly sick and we took him, first, to Children's who told us nothing was seriously wrong and sent him to their after-hours clinic where we wouldnt be able to be seen until after 4 am (it was 7 pm). So we took him to a different hospital that admitted him immediately with viral pneumonia. They thought he also had menigitis because his white blood cell count was 4 times the normal rate of the 12 thousand its supposed to be. When the test came back negative for that, they thought it may have been pertussis. That was negative as well. He had to stay a week in the hospital for viral pneumonia that could have possibly killed him had we waited a few more days to take him to the doctor. What made me so angry was that childrens said his temp was normal when we checked it at 102.7 before we left home with a rectal thermometer. it was "normal" because they used the ones that slide across the forehead and behind the ear and miscalculated. He was still at 102.4 when we got him to the doc. His temp got to as high as 103.9 rectally. I understand your pain and if you need someone to talk to, I am here for you. Know that you are in my devotions now, i'd like to hear updates.
