A private philanthropic organization in California that studies brain science sets up a little alarm for pregnant folks who load their baby’s ultrasound picture onto their iPhone to zip around to friends and family. The DANA Foundation alerts us to new research cautioning the rampant use of what so many folks must assume is a harmless little techy part of modern pregnancy.

Researchers are finding that unborn mice exposed to the same waves that the little handpiece emits through that cold gel the technician has squirted on a pregnant belly end up experiencing a derailing of their developing brain cells. The Yale researchers cited here conclude: “The effect of this slight disruption remains unknown. More testing is underway.”  So then, why are so many of us submitting our unborn to a most-often unnecessary procedure that might derail activity in a busily developing little brain? We need to be asking our doctors: “Is this procedure absolutely medically necessary?” And then ask “Why?” – that little word that so many of us don’t often like to have to deal with. The Yale research team suggests that, for now, we step away from the scanner unless there’s a clear and present need. It just might be worth waiting until after the birth for “baby’s first picture.”

I hated the feel of that gel going onto my pregnant belly.  I hope they outlaw this scan, because I didn't like it when they did it at all.  It's nice to see the little baby, but I don't think the Great Spirit intended for us to do that.

I thought your post was interesting, so I checked out the article, where I found this quote:

"About half of the 335 fetuses studied underwent ultrasound scans for periods ranging from 5 to 420 minutes. After durations of longer than 30 minutes, a small number of neurons failed to reach their proper positions in the cortex, the outer covering of the brain and the seat of “higher” thought processes such as reason and analysis in humans."

My ultrasounds were never that long, so I'm not too concerned about it.  Plus, the article also points out that a mouse's brain develops at about 20 times the speed of a human brain and I think that may make a big difference.

Most ultrasounds if used as intended for DIAGNOSTIC reasons are between 30-60 minutes.

Realistically you should only have ONE diagnostic ultrasound if any while you're pregnant. I mostly posted this for those women who are having ultrasounds every doctor visit for NO REASON and then also the 4d ultra sounds 'for fun'.

also, ultra sounds for determining the babies sex take significantly longer than diagnostic ultrasounds and are pointless.

In both pregancies, and therefore, 4 ultrasounds, I've never had an ultrasound even last 10 minutes.
My best friend had twins, was high-risk, and all of her 16 ultrasounds were 5-10 minutes long.

that seems crazy to me. my only ultra sound when i was pregnant was about 45 minutes.

with all of my doula clients theyre about that long too. ive only had 1 high risk client and she had one ultra sound that was about 15 minutes. that was the shortest and was used to only check one issue they were concerned with.
