My name is Angela Petrus. My friend, Ann Hemmer, mentioned my son's cause to her brother Bill Hemmer and he suggested contacting Kelly's Court. She spoke VERY highly of you and your ability to raise awareness to serious forms of injustice in our society.

My profoundly autistic son, Kyle, was attacked last October by his caregiver. Kyle, age 14, is developmentally an 11 month old infant. He is nonverbal and also has no other form of communication. He is also not potty trained. Kyle had a potty accident and the caregiver sent another aide to get bleach which he then proceeded to throw in my son's face. He had severe burns to his eyes/nose and mouth. I am going to attach the graphic picture that we took FOUR days after the attack. We weren't notified about the attack until it was already publicized in the newspaper!

I am trying to raise awareness of the injustice my son suffered. Also, I am searching for answers as to why the court system thought it was appropriate to only sentence the attacker to probation for such a premeditated heinous act.

Is there any way you can help me with this? It is my mission to ensure that no other disabled child/adult EVER has to suffer like this again. I cannot go back and change what happened to my baby but I CAN do everything in my power to STOP this from happening to the most innocent members of our society! I will NOT stop until my voice is heard. I will NOT stop until the laws are changed. I will NOT stop until there is justice for our disabled children. These innocent members of our society do not have a voice to raise in anger at the abuse they suffer daily.

I want to be their voice. I WILL BE THEIR VOICE!!!!

We were assured that the person that did this would face serious jail time as he was charged with Cruelty to the Infirm. This article from the local newspaper goes into detail about what happened next. http://www.thetowntalk.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090531/NEWS01/905310304

Recently our local news station did a feature on our cause and it can be seen here http://myarklamiss.com/content/video/?watch=1&cid=40582 or our youtube version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWRt0Xeh708

I created a cause on Facebook a few days ago to raise awareness about cruelty and abuse to the developmentally disabled and it already has over 1300 members! www.causes.com/justice4kyle

Here is also an excerpt from one of my journals on Cafemom.com about the injustice.

What goes around comes around. Even though that person got off without serious jail time, I sure wouldn't want to be that person because some day,  some time, this will come around and this person will have due justice.

I heard about this somewhere and saw pictures. I don't need to look at them again, they are burned in my memory. What kind of sick person could do a thing like this? Is there no one you can trust in this world?

My autistic brother was attacked and murdered by a group of boys when he was 16 years old.  His attackers never spent a moment in jail.  They were eventually let off because of a technicality.  This sort of thing makes me ill.  I also cried when I read it.

I sent this letter to Megyn Kelly (Kelly's Court on Fox) because Bill Hemmer thought she would be the best person to take on this cause. He sent this letter to his producers as well. I know there are no guarantees but I am hopeful we can raise awareness and cause change in the laws to better protect our societies most innocent victims. Thank you all for caring about this cause!

Good Luck, Sweetie. Kyle's story deserves media attention. His abuser deserves much more than what he received.
