The Benefits of Baby wearing...

Posted by April Lloyd on June 11, 2009 at 5:04pm in Baby wearing

My midwives suggested during prenatal visits that we try baby wearing w/ our first daughter, & I was hooked early on. We (my husband, too) used an Ellaroo Wrap and a Snugli carrier. I was so grateful to be familiar w/ baby wearing when my second daughter was born, because I needed my hands free to keep up w/ an extremely active toddler. My midwives mentioned several talking points about wearing infants:
*Sling babies cry less. (In other cultures, crying is measured in minutes--not hours--because infants are worn or in mother's arms except for sleep.)
*Sling babies learn more. (Researchers have also reported that carried babies show enhanced visual and auditory alertness.)
*Sling babies are more organized. (These babies tend to have less problems regulating breathing, body temp, & sleeping patterns.)
*Sling babies get "humanized" earlier. (Baby becomes aware of, and learns from, all the subtle facial expressions, body language, voice inflections and tones, & emotions of the caregiver.)
*Sling babies are smarter. (Environmental experiences--baby is exposed to Mom's daily routine--stimulate nerves to branch out and connect with other nerves, which helps the brain grow and develop.)
