What I do to reduce, reuse & recycle

I am new to vegetable gardening and new to my house. Because of these things, I was not aware of the preparation that would be needed when I wanted to start a garden. Still in it's winter state, a month or so ago, my garden showed no sign of what weeds, trees and other secrets it produced. I might add that these things were produced very quick!

After learning about the certain times certain vegetables needed to be planted, I realized that the garden area would not be prepped in time. I decided to look for other ways to start the plants during the time they needed to be started.

I had been hoarding empty egg cartons for a future time when I could reuse them. Something clicked (maybe it was all the reading I was doing on the internet) and I realized that those cartons were the perfect size for my vegetable seeds and the seedlings they would produce.

I decided to be creative and make those cartons work to my advantage and the photos you see is what became of my creativeness.

Items Needed:

empty egg carton
knife
1/4 cup soil for each space
seeds of choice (veggie, fruit, flower)
water

Cut off the top of egg carton as only the bottom half is used. Cut an x in the bottom of each egg space. Fill each egg space with 1/4 soil. Push 1 seed into the middle of each portion of soil. Spread the soil to cover seed. Water until moist.

Depending on the seed planted, you can start seeing sprouting within the next 7 - 10 days. Enjoy!

Be sure to check out the other plant pictures in my profile pictures section. I am by no means a pro at this, but I do have a few resources that may help if you have any questions.

Be sure to stop by again for more earth friendly craft ideas. I hope to help others abide by the phrase "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" just like I and my family are trying to.

Thanks for reading and make it a GREAT day!

great idea girl. I planted some seeds in some boxes my husband built out of wood. We have parsley, cilantro, sweet basil, oregeno, rosemary, chives, sage. Green onion, onion, green pepper, cucumber and summer squash. We have a few cucumbers ready to be picked. This is our first year trying and it has been fun. I might try the egg carton because i could not get my lettuce to grow. Maybe I'll try a few other things as well. That is a great tip..recycling sweetpea
