as I drink so much fruit juice on a daily basis

In the old days, people were limited to local fruit, in season. We are not designed to have the constant available cornucopia of fruit that we have. It does indeed carry tons of sugar and many of the varieties we have now are engineered to have even more sugar, as that's what sells.
