My dad taught me this lesson both consciously and unconsciously. Being an alcoholic he literally dumped his marriage to my mom down the drain. He would not commit to being a good parent and stop going to the bar after work. That being said, I have learned this important lesson. We all have our burdens and sins, the best reason to overcome them is having a child. When you see two lines on the pregnancy test it is time to put that child first. He came to this conclusion late. It was not until I had my daughter that it really clicked for him how much he could mean to somebody. My dad taught me that he could be a man with faults and still love a child unconditionally. When I was little, I always wanted him to be perfect and strong and basically a superman. Now I realize, with his help, that he will never be perfect but he is the best Grandpa I have ever seen. As an added blessing, he became an amazing father in the process.

I think this is great! My dad is an alcoholic, too, but over the past year and a half, I've really learned to appreciate him as a father and a grandfather. I completely feel the same way about my dad and I'm glad you've been able to grow closer to yours as well. :)
