My son is 17 months (almost 18) and had a speech delay. He hasn't been diagnosed with one by the PED...but he's 17 months and only saying a few words clearly. I'm not too worried about that fact, I was the same way. I was tested at 2 for deafness because I could say certain words...but you couldn't understand what I said. I plan on talking to his PED at his 18 month check-up in July, but I'm thinkin' there's not a whole lot they can do at this age.
The really good news is that he loves books and having you tell him what things are. And he does try to say things like "bird" that comes out "ba". So with all this in mind, I have decided to start working on teaching him baby sign language. I know some anyway from when I was little, and I have an awesome book called "Sign Language for Babies and Toddlers". We worked on it before, but he never seemed to interested...but now, he'll sit and let me read to him for 20 or 30 minutes. He'll 'play' with his flash cards. So I figure now is a great time to start trying again.
We are going to start with 'mommy', 'daddy', 'yes' and 'no'. I'll keep you updated. And if you have any susgestions, then please let me know!!

Yes and no aren't necessarily bad ideas, but at that age signing mommy and daddy can almost be abstract concepts.
My son is almost 3 and communicates with us through ASL because of his autism. When we first started teaching him signing, we started with signs like eat, drink, ball, dog, etc. Not the most important words in the universe BUT they were highly motivating because they were things that he loved. So my suggestion would be to start with the signs for any items that he might be particularly motivated to ask for. If the signs themselves are harder ones, you can always modify them for the time being. Also check out "Baby Signing Time". The videos are great and you can get them at the library, although I think they've actually started showing some of them on PBS. Good luck! :)
