I have twin boys who are 4 that both have ADHD. I have finally gotten a doctor who will listen and is willing to try meds with them. Our adventure started a year ago when a lovely neighbor called Child Protective Services and said that we were neglecting our children and they were running around the neighborhood. In reality they were two doors up playing with 6 other kids from the neighborhood, we live on a dead end. When the social workers saw the boys behavior they got us into ChildFind right away. But even they would not do anything (despite the fact that Joshua escaped a room with 6 adults 4 times and Caleb was climbing the bookcases) until we had an incident between their two evaluations in which they "drove" dh's truck into some trees and Caleb had to get stitches. We were referred to the county public school system who fortunately has a special preschool program for special needs kids. They evaluated them and couldn't believe that our doctor thought they were perfectly normal. They were enrolled and spent the last year in the program. I knew they had it all along, especially since their father and his immediate family have all been diagnosed with it and I have taught students with it.
At my wits end, I am a SAHM too, I asked my friends on facebook if they knew any pediatricians or child psychologists that would take/believe that kids under the age of 7 suffering from ADHD. A friend suggested a doctor and I didn't make the call right away. But this week at our church's VBS there was a 4 year old girl who was being treated by the same doctor with success and needless to say that is our new doctor.
We will be asking for the meds at their appointment in August, as we have tried everything else without success. Maybe one day they will be able to not need them, but right now they do. They have a right to have parents who can be unstressed, be in swim classes, go to the zoo, anywhere, without getting hurt because of their hyperactivity and impulsivity. The knowledge and help is there, and I plan to use it!!
