Science is Everywhere

discovery with sunmoonstars

Do you ever notice patterns and designs in nature?  Do you ever see some cool pictures and see something other than what the photographer intended?  This week I looked for Stars and Stripes in the natural world around us, in order to bring you this celebration of Independence Day from a different perspective!  I hope you enjoy!

I made a few abstract flags from objects found in the world around us.  Do you like any of them?

This first flag is blue star-shaped flowers (picture from peoriagardens) with pink striped clouds (picture from primadonna on flickr).

This second flag is star fruits (picture from about.com) and flower rows (picture from digitalphotoacademy).

This third flag is pink star shaped flowers (picture from northcreeknurseries) and rows of corn plantings (picture from National Geographic).

The fourth flag is a Hubble star image and a time elapse photo of star trails (both pictures from NASA).

This fifth flag is a Hubble star image and Jupiter's stripes (both pictures from NASA).

This sixth flag is starfish (picture from singingsands) and ripples of sand (picture from redbubble).

There are many other stripe patterns found in nature, but the stars were harder to find!  Some examples I found but didn't use in my art above include zebras, tigers, sedimentary rock, varegated plants, zuchini, watermelon, saturn's stripes, vegetable fields, striped fish, and various types of flowers.  Nature really is full of wonderous beauty!!

Enjoy your stars and stripes!

What a cool journal post!  I would have thought the stripes harder to find, well, I once again, learned something from your journal, lol.

thank you :)  The starfish one is starting to grow on me.  I like the first one best, though.

Awesome... and if you don't mind- I shall store this away for future classroom use! I think it would make a art/science/technology project! :0)
