This morning at around 245am my little boy Joel came into my bedroom saying 'sirens!' I just made him get in bed with daddy and I and go back to sleep. I look over to the window and see a lot of flashing lights so I got up and see 4 police cars and a sheriffs car. I go look out the kitchen window and see the apartment building less that 100 ft away on fire. I go wake up my husband and we go outside and watch as 2 apartments burn completely. Only to see moments later parimedics rushing away a stretcher with a very small person on it. My neighbor told me that 2 children live in the upstairs apartment with their mother and since the mother and the 4 year old girl were out of the apartment, it had to be the little 6 year old girl. She was covered in ashes and sout and was barely breathing. They found her in her bedroom. When they got to her, the apartment had been burning for 10 minutes. I prayed as soon as I saw this that Jesus wrap his arms around her and her family and be with those who are affected by this fire.
I saw an older lady who was walking around in her nightgown and with her purse so I suspected that she was displaced by the events unfolding in front of me. I walked down to talk to her and offer her any help I could. She said she just wanted to go back home because she needed to use the bathroom so I let her come up and use ours and offered her food and drink or anything else she might need. We stood there and talked with her for a few minutes. She said she had been here for 10 years and never seen anything like this. We told her if she needed anything at all, please ask. ***about 7am we talked to her again, she was allowed back in her apartment and she was thanking God that the firemen broke her window and got her out. She had fallen asleep in her living room. Her bed is against the wall of the apartment that burned.***
We stood out there for 2 hours watching the fire be extengusished. Little Joel was with us and all he could say was 'house broken Mommy!' We made Joel come back in and go back to bed with us. I never did get back to sleep. I couldnt get the images out of my head. My husband managed to get another hour of sleep but woke up to a dream where he was running in to a burning house to save our kids.
We are all very tired this morning. Nyssa slept right through it all and I thank God for that. I wish Joel hadnt seen any of it but now all we can do is talk to him about it and help him understand what he saw.
When I turned on the news this morning, I found out the little 6 year old girl died. I cant shake this feeling that it could happen to me. Living so close to others, you take that risk. Today I will be checking the batteries in my smoke alarms.
Here are a few pictures that my husband took.

Oh this is so tragic on many levels. For the little girl.. from god we come and to God we shall all return. My hope is that she did not suffer. For the family.. May God bring them ease and relief during this tremendous trial. for you and your family. Thank God you weren't hurt. Thank God your son was smart enough to wake up and tell mommy about the sirens. I'm so glad you saw the flashing lights. It's so important to see these things early. I hope your son can process this in a healthy way and that you all can find ease and peace.
I live in New York. on a street where all the houses are attached..and sometimes i wonder what if... but i try to take it out of my mind because we can't live our lives worriing about the what ifs... but it has crossed my mind. I can only pray that Allah will not send me that trial. I pray to that you never have to experience that trial in your own home.
hugs for your son and tell him i say Congratulations on being such a smart responsive kid.
