You have the nerve to ask that?
I rescue "evil dogs" all the time. Christians and all faiths ask "Why do you judge me on a few idiots with our title?" So why do you judge MY dog on a few animals that had bad owners?

I saved him from the shelter... he was a fighting dog. But he loves me and protects me like nothing happened. He doesn't blame humans for what happened to him and he took the chance to love me and trust me. When I was pregnant puking every where he put his head in my lap and gave me kisses. When he thought someone was by my son's window at the old house he stayed put right by that window at attention until the danger was gone.
He saved me from a Boxer attack (yep I was attacked by a boxer). He is a well trained baby. And my son's best friend. You attack him and you will have problems with his whole family. He is my family and I will put my reputation on the line for him. Even if I have to go to the courts and use every penny I ever earned to prove every person wrong about the breed I would. And I refuse to move some where, where he isn't accepted.
Just because I was attacked by a boxer does not mean I blame all boxers. I blamed the owner and when I found that owner... oh were they shaking.
He is now 8 years old and is sensibly an old man. Gentle and loving he sleeps by me every night.. the only lethal thing about him is his farting. And anyone who has met him has fallen in love with him. He is the reason my cousin has a pit now and the reason many of my friends went and bought pits. They really are great dogs. Just not for families who are too busy.
So please respect the breed. If you don't have time do not adopt or buy one. Because that puppy turns into a raving loony full of energy and needs about three walks a day and about 2 hours of fetch.
Buyou is buff because my husband would take him on pulls. Meaning he would tie him up to his bike and let him pull him around the subdivision three times just to tire him out.
They eat a lot.. their high energy makes them hungry all the time. The only thing in danger is your furniture and shoes. He ripped through 100 dollars worth of my shoes before I grew smart and bought him a Kong. They are the only thing to stand up to pits.
And beyond that.. introduce the whole family to them because they are protective. If you don't introduce them those people are strangers. When I had my son we had to introduce Buyou first with a blanket with my son's scent. Then we showed him to Buyou. And after that they are inseparable.
Thank you for this post. My son owns a red pit. He isn't quite a yr. old yet and he is massive. I never knew why he was so aggressive at times, but you have really opened up a lot of things about him in this post to me. I'm not afraid of him, but am afraid the one day he may turn on some little child because he never listens. Can you give me any pointers on this? He knows my 26 yr. old son, but the other day he tried to attack him. My son wasn't doing anything to the dog. The dog has never displayed this kind of behavior before. My 21 yr. old owns him and he even acted like he was going to attack him at one point. Also, is it acceptable to discipline pits by hitting them in the face? My son said because they are hard headed someone told him you are to do this to get them to obey you. I will not let him do this. I have never hit him and he never has shown any aggressive behaviour to me. I just tell him no and put him out on the chain for a time. Kinda like making him do "time out". But he obeys my son better than me. Please help me with anything you can think of. Thank you in advance.
I grew up being taught that pit bulls are dangerous, I now know after having met quite a few that they just need a lot of training and can be good dogs. good for you to help stop the stereotyping and show people they just need to be educated on pits if they are to own one. My BIL's dog is a pit and she is like 16 years old and very fragile, I turned by back for 1 sec. and my two year old jump on her back and yelled yeeee hawwwww! I had a heart attack. Know what she did? NOTHING!!! She ran at first, cause he hurt her I'm sure, then came right back tail wagging and kissing him! Such a mean dog *insert sarcasm here*.
Another question I have--How much should I feed him and how many times a day? He is always hungry and I'm wondering if I'm not feeding him enough. He gets one 2 cup measures in the morning and the same at night. We feed him Purina Puppy Chow. But he acts like he's still hungry. If this is enough, is there something else I can supplement with? or should I? Thanks for your expertise.

Since Pits are highly active animals I would look into High active food and they have directions on what to do on poundage.
Another thing I do is I use aggressive training. I don't hit but I charge the dog and pin him to the ground. I then growl and bare my teeth. Do not let the dog up for about 5 to 20 minutes... however long you feel the dog needs to take to get the message. And then do it until he gets the message that YOU are the boss not him.
LOL buyou is the same way. He snuggles with kittens and lets my son play horsey with him.
Pits are some of the most gentle, friendly, lovable dogs I've ever been around. Any owner should educate themselves on the breed of dog they are considering. There's a book, Raising Rover, that is full of facts about each breed. We just finished dog sitting my neighbors' pit for them while they were away for vacation. I miss her now. =)
I know what you mean... they can be such big babies. Mine thinks he is a lap dog. Oh and he drools!
