For those of you who don't know, and just for some brief background, my Mother is a Jehovah's Witness. We both have an understanding that we can agree to disagree, but that we're both trying to proseltyze the other.
Anyways.... I've been studying Galatians 2:20 lately, and last night something told me to go look that verse up in the NWT (New World Translation - the JW Bible). I was so shocked that I literally wanted to throw it across the room.
I constantly hear people asking what's the big difference between the various versions. Well, if this one isn't one of the most blaring examples, I don't know what is.
Galations 2:20 in the KJV starts off with: I am crucified with Christ ....
The NWT reads: I am impaled along with Christ...
NOW.... First of all, for those of you who may not know... the Jehovah's Witness' don't believe that Jesus died on a cross. They believe that he died on a torture stake. I have done some studies on this, and regardless of whether it was a cross as most believe, or a torture stake is irrelevent when compared to the difference between being crucified and impaled!!!!! There is a HUGE difference here!
The footnote in the NWT says "fastened to a stake (pole)". Ummm....ok. Out of all the numerous definitions I looked up this morning regarding impaled, only two said to fasten, stick, or fix upon a sharpened stake or the like. Most people associate impalement with the common definition which states that a person is pierced with a sharpened stake that is thrust up through the body.
Impalement is a term that refers to situations in which objects are driven through the body, causing deep stabbing wounds. It can refer either to accidental events or to deliberate wounding used as a method of torture or execution.
In closing... I'll ask again why does it matter which version you use? I'll tell you why... because different words change the meanings. That's why we have such a rich selection of words at our disposal. That doesn't mean that they mean the same thing at all. Now while this was an example used out of the JW's Bible, there are just as many in the other "New" translations as well. For those who say that it's harder to understand - GET A DICTIONARY! Learn something!
Secondly, believe it or not, there has been numerous studies that proove that the KJV is at a 5th grade reading comprehension level, while most other "New" versions are at an 8th grade reading comprehension level or higher.
Just because it's more "readable" doesn't make it more accurate!

I'll come back with more later....

Debbie~ thanks so much for this post! I understand where you are coming from and I agree with you. BUT, I just have such a hard time with the way it is worded. I read the KJV and then have to go to my study Bible to untwist my brain lol! I just haven't gotten the hang of reading it and understanding it yet, but I am working on it=) I worry that I am misunderstanding the text no matter which version I read, that is why I rely on my church services and Bible studies so much. I want to ensure that I am not putting my own meaning into it and getting exactly what God wants me to get out of each and every word=) You did an excellent job of explaining this. God bless you my dear SIC!
Good for you keep diging and ask the HOLY SPRIT to guide you to HIS truth...
Very interesting post. Did you know that there are no originals of ANY of the Bible? Only copies. Don't fret, and remember that Christ died for us. nomatter how or what he died on or from. His blood was shed for unconceived billions of persons that, for the large part, argue and kill each other-something Christ never did. Let's be peaceful with one another-our Nation needs confident Christians, not ones that are finger-pointing and damning each other's beliefs constantly. ////
The KJV is the closest to the original manuscripts copied out of Antioch (Syria, where the first believers were called Christians). The newer versions are all copied from the manuscripts which came out of Alexandria,Egypt which had been copied by a scholar named Origen (makes for an interesting study). It's best to cross-reference using an exhaustive Bible dictionary when using any version other than the KJV. We should be peaceful, but we have to tell the truth. The Bible tells us "to cry loud, and spare not". I was raise JW and the NWT is quite tainted! There are sincere people following these lies. People who deny the deity of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ because of what they have been taught from the NWT. Jesus said, "the truth shall make you free". This has proven true for myself and many who have escaped the falsehoods taught by the WatchTower Society.
Hosea 4:6 says, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children."
Lexylex - Thanks for showing up and supporting me. More people need to hear your story. ((Hugs))
MomaNana2008 - Sticking to the topic of Jehovah's Witness' who don't believe in the deity of Jesus Christ (as just one of the many main doctrines they don't believe), they have never accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior who died for THEIR sins. For this reason and many others, is why I study JW doctrine. Because... if main stream Christianity is right, and the JW's are wrong... that means that they are ALL destined for Hell. That being my belief, I don't wish to see any perish. Not only that but I'm more concerned with pleasing God than pleasing man.
Might I suggest you see my other journal called "Do you love Jesus enough to offend the world?"
They have a NKJV. The only difference is that they changed the thou and thee and stuff like that. I still love my KJV; but for the kids when they were still home and we homeschooled; we got them the New King James Version. Now our Granddaughter reads from it.
