Delusions of grandeur.

The fireworks, I mean.

Although a rather dreary, waterlogged day threatened to thwart their efforts, our favorite team of pyromaniacs put on their fireworks display as scheduled and I must say it wowed the socks right off our feet.

Bettendorf puts quite a few fists full of dollars toward their fireworks extravaganza and this year was no different.  We knew that if they were still going to get jiggy with the pyrotechnics despite inclement weather, we had better make an attempt to see it or be out of luck until next year.  It's just. That.  Impressive.

So, just before dusk, we loaded up the family and headed to my parents' house with our lawn chairs and The Big Blanket and parked in their drive.  They live walking-distance from what has become Our Spot.  We manage to sit there every year.  We are veteran fireworks spectators.  They set up the whole shebang on the same grassy knoll every year, so we know to park our carcasses where the streetlights and trees won't block one bit of our view.

This was the first year that our four-year-old braved the front row seats with us.  Just before Sparkly Boom-Boom Time, she got a little nervous and wanted to head back to Nana and Poppa's.  She kept her fingers in her ears and eventually the sight of those magical explosions of color and glitter became more enthralling than upsetting and she was glad she stuck it out.

So it turned out that, contrary to what Mother Nature had in mind for us, we DID get to end the day with an incredibly fantastic bang.

The older girls' reactions were identical.  "That was AWESOME!"

As the smoke dissipated after a breathtaking finale, my husband looked at me coyly and quietly said, "That ought to hold ya."

Was it good for you?

That was nicely put.  My kids were the only ones not screaming at the top of their lungs in the under 4 group..

One of these days I'm going to drag myself to Iowa and see the show out in Gowrie or Denison with the inlaws.  You Midwesterners do it up right from what I hear.  Even hubs has said that the most drunken redneck can't put on a show like you corn folk.  : )

We are lucky enough to be able to see the fireworks perfectly from our front porch, yet we are far enough that there is really no "bang!"  It was awesome.

I'm glad you had a good time.  We saw them in a nearby town & they were spectacular.  My kids were squealing & laughing & talking about each individual firework, "That was a really big one,"  "Look at all the colors."  We were so close, our car, clothes, eyes got covered in soot.  Good times, good times.
