I came to this realization a few days ago.

First of course, there must be religious knowledge. Now I do not condone religion of any sort in public schools, but there must be a way to educate our children with the facts about different cultures and their religions!

Actually, I hate the fact that the pledge is said in schools! That sickens me to no end!

Now here you are saying you think there should be "religious tolerance" then you say the Pledge of Allegiance "sickens" you?  What kind of tolerance is that?  See, this is what bugs me the most about those who call for "tolerance."  It only applies to things you agree with.  That's NOT tolerance. That's hypocrisy.  I see this a lot when it comes to Christianity.  People expect Christians to tolerate all other religions, but very few tolerate Christianity.  Well, I don't tolerate ANY "religion."  Religion is man made and has been man's downfall for centuries.  I'm about "relationship" with the living, and only true Creator of the universe.  That's what Christianity is about.   People can keep their religion, thank you.  I agree it shouldn't be taught in schools...it should be left to the parents to teach their children when it comes to something so personal.

I don't think she's saying the Pledge itself sickens her. Rather that schools requiring it to be said sickens her because it is not embracing the ideaology of religious tolerance but rather gives the impression that all should follow one specific God and if you do not you are somehow less of an American.

For the OP. The original pledge never had the words "Under God" in it. It read as follows.

"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

n 1923, the words, "the Flag of the United States of America" were added. At this time it read:

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Bellamy's daughter objected to this alteration. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

When schools mandate the Pledge be said in the mornings it is in essence "teaching" about religion. I think that is what the OP meant by her statement.

I don't think OP meant the pledge itself sickens her. Just the fact that children HAVE to say it everyday. It's not something all kids believe. It's not something all parents want their kids saying. But schools make such a big deal out of it. I don't think it belongs in school, just like religion. But religious history is fine. Christianity is a big part of America's history. So it's expected to end up in the history book somewhere. Same with other religions and places. It just shouldn't be taught to be practiced in public schools. If it matters to parents, they can do it at home.

And while YES a child could refrain from saying Under God as they recite the pledge if their beliefs do  not follow, however there might be ostracization by the child's peers, etc. It's difficult to find a balance and that's why Ipersonally feel the pledge should be returned to one of it's former versions, rather than the 1954 version.

I am glad most of you understood that I was not referring to the pledge itself just the fact that children are required to recite it.

Sometimes all it takes is a little clarification of what we mean in order to get our message across. However we all should be a little more aware of the words we choose to use so we do not offend others easily.

Youmust forgive Brie. She is very passionate about her beliefs but does not always voice her opinion in the best way. Still her heart is in the right place! She's just a work in progress as the rest of us are.

I speak the truth, as it is people (no more and no less)!  Deal with it or ignore it, de-friend me if we are CM friends. I do not care what anyone thinks at all in this entire world of me, especially anyone on-line. I dare anyone to test me, show up at my door and ask the same questions you ask behind your computer screen to my face.......I 100% guarantee you will receive the same sort of response, not exactly word-for-word but super close to it!!
