Why do people try to use that line about everything under the sun when other people are trying to give information and/or educate people?  Doesn't anyone realize how moronic that sounds?

People get in horrible car accidents all the time and miraculously walk away without a scratch.  There are plenty who drink insane amounts of alcohol and take tons of drugs and a lot of them somehow never seem to OD.  There are folks who have unprotected sex with 100 different partners and somehow manage to avoid STDs.  Just because some people indulge in risky, dangerous activities and manage to come out unmarred on the other side doesn't negate the fact that the choices they've made are risky and dangerous.

So if I could just never see "Well I *insert something stupid here* and I'M FINE!" used as an argument ever again I'd be much obliged.  The same goes for people who think consequences from anything are either imminent or non-existant.  That cigarette I smoked ten minutes ago isn't going to kill me tomorrow, but it will kill me eventually.  So just because you've fed your kid a heaping bowl of HFCS-Aspartame cocktail pudding with a side of red dye for the last 6 months and they haven't keeled over yet doesn't mean that it's safe.  Some of the choices we make now for ourselves AND our children will have consequences, both positive and negative, well into the future.

I'm not perfect, and I don't always make the best choices.  But for craps sakes at least I can admit it.  I swear there are people out there who will fight tooth and nail to remain ignorant about things.  So in the future if all you have to bring to the table is "Well I strapped my kid to the hood of my car instead of putting her in a carseat and SHE turned out fine" then please move the hell aside and give other people the chance to learn and better themselves.  Rant over.

Oh that argument drives me crazy.

The funniest (ironic) example I heard recently was on the view.  They were talking about research showing how harmful spanking is.  One main point is that spanking affects peoples sex lives.

Whoopi and Sherri were both big advocates of spanking.  They both said, "well I don't have any sexual issues and I was spanked."

In other words they turned out okay...except Sherri has admited to numerous abortions and whoopi has had multiple marriages.  I don't mean one or two on either.  Tell me that isn't screwed up.

They are fine people and I am not saying that they are not but it isn't the picture of health.

I say well I was raped and I turned out okay.  Does that mean everyone should be raped?  YOU CRAZY PEOPLE.

Thanks for letting me vent on your post.  You took the words out of my mouth.

Katie! You and I are on the same wavelength! I deleted a rant about this in an answer today, because i just didn't want to get into it. My take on it was this:

When you say "I did such and such and my kids turned out fine" or "My mom did such and such and I turned out fine" my answer is "How the hell do you know?" I mean, have you traveled to an alternate universe where you saw how you/your children would have turned out if the other option had been chosen? I think not! While I accept that there are an infinite number of dimensions to our universe, I do not believe that the members of CafeMom have the ability to travel between them. Therefore, they have no way of knowing whether or not your choice made a difference. It could have turned out worse, it could have turned out better. The fact is that YOU DON'T KNOW, so don't use that argument!

I ditto Rebecca: Thanks for letting me vent on your post!

Oh.... I just called my fiance "stupid" last night over his arguing that cigarettes won't kill him and that his mom, grandma and grandfather all lived long lives (toting around oxygen tanks and coughing up lungs..). So since "they are fine, I will be fine too".

Irks the hell out of me because I know he is normally a brighter person than that.

Amen. Just because something works fine for someone, it doesn't for someone else. I was induced both times, and I would NEVER do it again. I wasn't aware of the dangers. It did work fine, but it's still awful knowing that it wasn't fine for other people. I was induced with Jacob because he was already at 9 days late, but I went into labor on my own. It was just SOOO freaking slow. Like one contraction every 15 minutes, then every hour, then 6 seconds later. I was lucky though, because I was only in full labor for a little over 6 hours from being induced.

With Noah I admit I was selfish and asked to be induced when he was only 5 days late. They wanted to wait a week later and I felt guilty about a huge possibility of them having the same bday. (They are only 9 days apart). But the same thing with Noah. I went into the hospital the night before and started having contractions on my own. So I atleast was ready to have the babies when they gave it to me. I can't believe some of the people that say their doctor wanted to induce them two weeks early for the doctors convienience.

Sorry that was so long!

And I REALLY hate when people say well I smoked during pregnancy and my child was fine, or I drank and my baby didn't have fetal alcohol syndrome. WTF. How can you even try to justify something like that.
