7/15/09 update on girls

We had an appt in Birmingham today with the cleft team. Firstof all, the girls are over the pneumonia now and back to thier crazy little selves again. For those of you who dont know, brianna was admitted on 7/1 and went hom 7/3. She was on oxygen for 3 days and was given rochephin through IV and sent home on 2 antibiotics. One for the pneumonia and the other for a shaph infection in her ear. Back to the appt today... we saw the audiologist 1st and she did the tympanogram on the girls. braley did fine and passede her hearing test. Brianna's she could not do b/c of the staph infection. Then we saw the ENT for Brianna. He said her tube in L ear was out and R ear was gross. Fluid in both ears, so she is getting a new set of tubes, not sure when, they will call with date. He is going to put some kind of special tube in her right ear that has an antibiotic on it to help with the infection. Also gave me more ear drops and a solution of vinegar and water to clean before the drops go in. also an oral antibiotic. afte rthat we saw the speech pathologist. She is a little conerned with speech especially Brianna's, but hopes it will get better after we get her ear better. It's not the amount of words they say, but they both only make "m" and "n" sounds, no other consonants.  Finally we saw the plastic surgeon and we discussed them seeing a dentist and he said they need to have regular checkups every 6 months. Also, the oral surgeon will not seee them until they are a little older and def will not do any surgeries until they start losing some baby teeth, then the bone will be strong enough for the procedure. He checked thier palates and said they looked good, no holes!! They asre still recieving speech therapy every 2 weeks through EI. If they dont have alot of progress by the time they are 3, he will have to figure out why and fix it surgically.  We go back to them in January 2010, but hopefully they will have made alot of progress by then. I dont want any more surgeries than necessary! Overall, it went really good today.
