I have read some of the other posts and I agree - The deaths of Elvis, Princess Diana, JFK Jr - and most especially 9/11 - all of those are moments of history that I wish we had not had to live through but for me there is one pop culture event that I will never, ever, forget.
The date was April 20, 1999 - it was a Tuesday. It was the day that 12 students died, 21 were injured and the veil of innocence and perceived safety of high school was ripped from the eyes of the nation. It was Columbine.
Comments:
I was in 6th grade maybe 2 miles away from Columbine when it happened. One of the girls who died used to babysit my family. And all I remember is the lunch aides coming in right before lunch ended to tell us that we couldn't go outside for recess and would be escorted to our classrooms because they thought someone brought a grenade to Columbine. It was not until we were let out at 5pm or so that we found out what had really happened. I remember so many upset classmates because they had older siblings or neighbors at Columbine and they did not know if they were ok. I remember coming back to school only to find out one of my friends older brothers was in the library and watched his friends get shot. That will always be a painful, frightening memory for me. School in Colorado has never been the same since that awful fateful day.

I was in highschool when it happened. None of us felt safe after that.
