This Psalm is about God saving us from our enemies. Seems pretty simple, right? It is in a way because God does very simply save us from our enemies. What is a little bit complicated is identifying who our enemies are.
It is easy to know someone is an enemy if they are overtly acrimonious to us. It is another thing altogether to identify someone who seems to be on the opposite side of the fence than we are as our automatic enemy. Sometimes this creates enemies that are not even there.
There are times when we need to lower our defenses a bit so that we can see more clearly that maybe the person we thought was our enemy really was just someone who sees things differently than we do. God doesn't need to save us from these people, but from our own prejudices that led us to believe that someone different than us was our enemy.
We need to open our hearts up to seeing people for who they are, not for who we perceive them to be. It is then that we can really witness and minister to them. That is what Jesus did. He stepped out of his comfort zone and went out among those who were considered to be his enemies - The unclean, evil, heathens that none of the church leaders of his day wanted to deal with. It definitely gives us a different perspective of our enemies when we see how Jesus reacted to people.
I know that God will always be there to save me from my enemies. I also know that there are always lessons to be learned from my enemies, either real or imagined. It is up to me to pray, discern and learn.
